The San Francisco 49ers may have taken a step toward making one of the more intriguing potential reunions of the offseason possible.
According to Tom Pelissero, the 49ers recently restructured the contract of star pass rusher Nick Bosa. The move cleared roughly $17.1 million in salary cap space for the 2026 season, giving San Francisco more financial flexibility as free agency continues.
While contract restructures are common across the NFL, the timing of this one has sparked speculation about a possible move involving Nick’s older brother, Joey Bosa.
The veteran edge rusher has once again become a name to watch on the free-agent market. Last offseason, the 49ers were rumored to have interest in bringing Joey to the Bay Area before he ultimately signed with the Buffalo Bills. Now, with San Francisco creating additional cap space, the idea of pairing the two brothers on the same defensive line has resurfaced.
Adding help at defensive end has become a clear priority for the 49ers this offseason. The surprise retirement of Bryce Huff left the team thinner on the edge than expected, increasing the need for another experienced pass rusher.
Nick Bosa remains the centerpiece of the defensive line, but the team could benefit from another proven veteran who can consistently generate pressure off the edge.
Joey Bosa would certainly fit that description. The former first-round pick has been one of the league’s most disruptive edge defenders when healthy. During the 2025 season, he recorded five sacks and 54 pressures, ranking among the more productive pass rushers in the league according to Pro Football Focus.
Market projections suggest Joey could command a contract worth roughly $13–14 million per year, a figure that may now be more manageable for San Francisco following Nick Bosa’s restructure.
If the 49ers were able to complete the move, it would create one of the more fascinating defensive line pairings in the NFL. The two brothers have never played on the same team at the professional level, but both have developed into elite pass rushers during their careers.
Beyond the storylines, the move would also address a real roster need for San Francisco. The team still has young defensive linemen such as Mykel Williams and Keion White, but both players have been used frequently on the interior.
Adding Joey Bosa would give the 49ers a true edge defender capable of taking significant snaps and helping take pressure off Nick.
The 49ers could still look to add another pass rusher in the upcoming draft, but bringing in Joey Bosa would provide an immediate boost to a defensive line that currently lacks proven depth on the outside.
Whether the move ultimately happens remains to be seen, but Nick Bosa’s contract restructure has certainly opened the door for the possibility of the brothers finally lining up together in San Francisco.
