San Francisco swapped one potential roster casualty for another, raising the question of whether the 49ers needed to make the move at all.

The San Francisco 49ers made a trade on the margins Sunday night, flipping running back Zamir White to the New Orleans Saints for veteran linebacker Deion Jones.

It’s a small player-for-player deal between two teams looking to reallocate depth ahead of final roster cuts, but it does beg the question of whether the 49ers actually needed to make this move.

For both players involved, there’s a real chance they could have become roster casualties as teams trim down to their 53-man rosters.

Jones had just signed with New Orleans earlier this month and was considered a long shot to make the Saints’ roster in an already established linebacker room. That means the 31-year-old veteran potentially could have been available as a free agent in a matter of days.

Instead, San Francisco gave up White to guarantee Jones lands on its roster.

There’s also an argument that running back is a position where the 49ers could eventually need the depth. Christian McCaffrey remains one of the NFL’s best players when healthy, but his injury history makes having capable options behind him important over the course of a 17-game season.

Still, the 49ers clearly saw something they liked in Jones.

He spent the first six seasons of his career with the Atlanta Falcons, making the Pro Bowl in 2017, and already has familiarity with current 49ers defensive coordinator Raheem Morris from their time together in Atlanta. San Francisco also has some uncertainty further down its linebacker depth chart and has been thin at that position in the past due to injuries.

But Jones isn’t necessarily the player he once was. He spent the past two seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers without making a start, appearing in just two games in 2024 before playing all 17 last season largely as a reserve and special teams contributor. He then remained available until August before signing with New Orleans.

Of course, there’s no guarantee White was making San Francisco’s roster either. He signed with the 49ers earlier this month and faced long odds of sticking after McCaffrey, Kaelon Black and Jordan James returned from injuries. So rather than simply viewing this as San Francisco giving up running back depth, it’s more accurately a positional swap involving two players who were potentially on the roster bubble.

The Saints desperately needed running back depth with Alvin Kamara sidelined by an MCL injury and Audric Estime and Devin Neal also dealing with injuries. San Francisco, meanwhile, decided it could afford to part with White to add an experienced linebacker.

Ultimately, it’s a low-stakes move. But with Jones potentially headed toward the open market anyway, the 49ers are betting that securing him now was worth giving up a player they may not have kept themselves.
