Despite recent signings, the 49ers' receiver hunt isn't over. Could a top talent at pick 27 electrify their offense?
Following the aggressive free agency signings of Mike Evans and Christian Kirk, the 49ers’ wide receiver room finally has the veteran "men" Kyle Shanahan craves making the pressure to use the No. 27 overall pick on a wideout has significantly cooled. However, in the NFL, you can never have enough playmakers. If a blue chip talent falls to the end of the first round, John Lynch might find the value too good to pass up. If the Niners decide to double down on the air attack, these are the three best options likely to be on the board.
Denzel Boston (Washington)
The Red Zone Powerhouse
Standing 6'4" and 212 lbs, he brings a massive catch radius that would make Brock Purdy’s life significantly easier.
- The Stats: Boston was a scoring machine at Washington, hauling in 11 touchdowns and 881 yards in 2025. He finished the season with an elite 87.6 PFF grade, ranking in the top 10 nationally.
- The Fit: Boston is a "contested catch artist" with a 76.9% success rate in 50/50 ball situations. Beyond his hands, he is a "no block, no rock" player who fits the 49ers' physical run blocking identity. Adding him alongside Mike Evans would give San Francisco two "twin towers" on the outside, creating a nightmare for smaller NFC West cornerbacks.
Omar Cooper Jr. (Indiana)
The "Slot Bully"
Coming off a National Championship run with the Hoosiers, Cooper is the definition of a "Shanahan receiver." He is a thick, powerful weapon who plays more like a running back once the ball is in his hands.
- The Stats: Cooper recorded 64 catches for 866 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2025. He is a YAC (yards after catch) monster, forcing 27 missed tackles last season alone.
- The Fit: Scouts frequently compare Cooper to a faster version of Jarvis Landry or a more compact Brandon Aiyuk. He primarily operates out of the slot but has "inside-out" flexibility. His toughness over the middle and willingness to punish defenders as a blocker make him a "dream fit" for the 49ers' West Coast scheme.
K.C. Concepcion (Texas A&M)
The Dynamic YAC Specialist
If Kyle Shanahan wants to add pure "lighting" to the offense, Concepcion is the pick. A First-team All-American as an all purpose threat, he is arguably the most versatile athlete in the 2026 class.
- The Stats: Concepcion racked up over 900 receiving yards and 25 career touchdowns with the Aggies. He is a dual threat weapon who also impacts the game as a punt returner and gadget runner.
- The Fit: Concepcion is "dynamite" with the ball in his hands, offering the kind of immediate acceleration that fuels the 49ers' screen game. While he may be smaller than Boston, his ability to manipulate defensive backs' hips and create separation in short yardage situations is elite. He would be a lethal weapon in motion, keeping defenses guessing on every snap.
The Verdict
While wide receiver isn't the "glaring" need it was two months ago, the 49ers are in a luxury position. If Denzel Boston is there at 27, his size and red zone dominance might be too enticing for a team looking to maximize its championship window right now.
However, if they want to lean into the "YAC-Bros" identity that has defined the Shanahan era, Omar Cooper Jr. or K.C. Concepcion provide the toughness and explosive versatility to take this offense from great to unstoppable.
