Fresh off a dominant 4-0 start, San Francisco faces a brutal gauntlet against divisional rivals and elite quarterbacks that will test their championship resolve through a grueling mid-season stretch.

The San Francisco 49ers enter Week 5 standing tall as one of the NFL’s three remaining undefeated teams. San Francisco's initial 4-0 stretch featured its fair share of adversity, from grinding out a Week 1 win over the Los Angeles Rams to overcoming a mounting injury bug in Sunday's 24-14 victory over the Denver Broncos.

While the first month proved the 49ers have the depth to overcome mid-game setbacks, the next four weeks present a brutal gauntlet of opponents that will determine whether San Francisco is merely a hot-starting contender or a true championship favorite.

Week 5: At Seattle Seahawks

San Francisco opens its upcoming four-game slate with a trip to Lumen Field to face the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks. It marks the first meeting between the rivals since Seattle eliminated the 49ers in last season's divisional round.

However, the 2026 Seahawks have shown areas of vulnerability. Seattle’s ground game faces questions after Kenneth Walker III departed in free agency and his primary backup landed on injured reserve. With Seattle struggling to establish a consistent rushing attack, Raheem Morris’ front seven has an opportunity to shut down the run early and force Seattle into obvious passing situations.

Week 6: Vs. Washington Commanders

Returning home in Week 6, the 49ers host the Washington Commanders. Washington has dealt with its own quarterback injuries early in the year, though star quarterback Jayden Daniels is expected to be fully healthy for this matchup.

Washington’s secondary has struggled through the opening month, surrendering chunk plays through the air. This matchup aligns favorably for Brock Purdy, whose pinpoint accuracy and early MVP-level play should allow San Francisco’s pass catchers to exploit Washington's soft coverage schemes.

Week 7: At Atlanta Falcons

In Week 7, San Francisco embarks on a cross-country trip to face Michael Penix Jr. and head coach Kevin Stefanski’s Atlanta Falcons. Currently sitting at 2-2, Atlanta showcased its offensive identity on Monday Night Football in Week 4, relying on a heavy dosage of its backfield to control time of possession.

While Atlanta found success on the ground against New Orleans, if San Francisco can stifle Atlanta's running game early, Penix will be forced to win through the air against a disciplined 49ers secondary.

Week 8: BYE | Week 9: Vs. Las Vegas Raiders

Following a Week 8 bye, the 49ers host the Las Vegas Raiders at Levi’s Stadium. Las Vegas has executed an impressive turnaround in 2026, opening the year 3-0 before dropping a close Week 4 decision to the Kansas City Chiefs. Quarterback Kirk Cousins is operating efficiently.

San Francisco holds the rest advantage coming off its bye, but the Raiders represent a genuine threat in the second half of the schedule. Bringing maximum focus out of the week off will be essential.

The Bottom Line

A 4-0 start earned national attention and unanimous No. 1 rankings across the country. Over the next month, Kyle Shanahan’s squad will either solidify its grip on the conference or lose ground in a tight NFC playoff picture.
