Aiyuk's skipped rehab and team voided contract cast doubt on his 2026 return. The 49ers are prepared to succeed, with or without their star receiver.
The San Francisco 49ers cannot count on Brandon Aiyuk to contribute in the 2026 season. They can't count on him, because he has not proven to show any interest in being there.
Bleacher Report's Moe Moton detailed what all that Aiyuk has put the team through over the last two seasons and why the receiver has responded in the way that he has responded. Moton wrote the following of the San Francisco wide receiver and the 49ers as they navigate the 2026 offseason.
"Aiyuk tore his ACL and MCL midway through the 2024 campaign. He then went through a gradual rehab process complicated by his lack of cooperation and communication with the club.
According to ESPN's Nick Wagoner, Aiyuk "skipped multiple rehab sessions." Head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters that the team couldn't reach him during his recovery.
It's hard to believe the 49ers could trust the 28-year-old and mend fences with him after that sequence of events. Remember, San Francisco voided guaranteed money in the four-year, $120 million deal he signed during the 2024 offseason."
San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan leaves the field after the game against the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. Trevor Ruszkowski-Imagn ImagesSkipping rehab sessions is certainly a red flag. It highlights suspicion over his motivation to play from an outside perspective, though no one can say for sure why Aiyuk chose to do so. Even so, you would think that a player with championship aspirations or determination to be great would want to return as fast as possible and speed up the recovery process. After all, Aiyuk gets paid to catch passes and play football for a living.
Then again, there's the 49ers side of the equation, who voided the guaranteed side of his contract.
It's hard to speak with certainty regarding much of the situation between the wide receiver and his team, but what seems evident is that the team is willing to move forward with or without him.
The addition of Mike Evans and Christian Kirk as wide receiver indicates the team is more than ready to play another season without Aiyuk after going 12-5 in the 2026 season. Given the team fared so well without the talented receiver, maybe his return is not that pressing for the Niners.
The 49ers have a frustrating situation on their hands without the ability to have Aiyuk on the field to score touchdowns during his contract. Nevertheless, the 49ers are set to succeed with or without him when they take the field next September.
