How will Romello Height impact the 49ers?
The San Francisco 49ers have been widely criticized for their questionable choices during the 2026 NFL Draft. However, that’s causing some of their additions to go underappreciated, particularly Texas Tech edge rusher Romello Height in round three. The rookie can revitalize the 49ers' pass rush and add another dangerous presence opposite Nick Bosa.
Height’s prowess rushing the passer stems from his elite first step. He’s able to keep that speed after the initial burst and consistently win around the edge. He’s flexible and can bend below the lineman to turn the corner and sack the quarterback.
This ability is impressive, but it is exponentially more dangerous with his developed pass rush skillset. Height has spent six years in college, which can be viewed positively or negatively. Optimistically, it’s given him time to develop an arsenal move that keeps the opposing lineman guessing. He has a plan heading into each snap and understands how to expose his competition.
This was evident last season when Height totalled 11.5 sacks in 2025. He established himself as a dynamic threat and someone who consistently provides pressure on the quarterback. He likely won’t ever reach this production in the NFL, but will be an excellent complementary piece.
While Height’s a developed pass rusher, he’s raw against the run. His mediocre frame (six-foot-three, 240 pounds) paired with subpar anchor, creates a disadvantage for him. He too frequently gets eliminated from plays and can’t separate from his block. As a result, he won’t see the field much on these downs early in his career.
This, combined with his aforementioned collegiate experience, makes him a 25-year-old prospect, limiting Height’s ceiling. He’s someone who could be highly impactful for his rookie contract, but may not get an extension past that.
Regardless, that type of player is needed on the 49ers' roster. An explosive pass rusher on a cheap deal will help sustain the 49ers' championship window. This is required when expensive players like Nick Bosa, Brock Purdy, Fred Warner, and Christian McCaffrey are on the roster. Even if he doesn’t get a second contract, he fits the 49ers' timeline and will be a fantastic piece on defense.
Overall, the 49ers' adding Romello Height in round three of the NFL Draft is an underrated addition who will be a major contributor on their defensive line. His explosiveness and prowess rushing the passer will make him a cheap option who perfectly complements Nick Bosa.
