Fresh off an international blowout, San Francisco battles travel fatigue and a dual-threat quarterback to secure a perfect start behind a relentless ground attack and Nick Bosa’s pressure.
After dominating the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 down in Melbourne, the San Francisco 49ers return to Santa Clara for their 2026 home opener against the Miami Dolphins.
Miami limps into Levi's Stadium at 0-1 following a sloppy 27-13 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders, but Kyle Shanahan's squad cannot afford an emotional hangover after a 15 hour flight across the Pacific.
Here are the critical keys to the game and key matchups that will determine if the 49ers start 2-0.
Keys to the Game
1. Contain Malik Willis & Rush with Gap Discipline
Miami quarterback Malik Willis was sacked five times by Las Vegas, but he also provided Miami's lone touchdown on a 14-yard scramble. The 49ers generated 14 pressures against Matthew Stafford in Week 1. Nick Bosa and Osa Odighizuwa need to pin their ears back, but they must keep Willis inside the pocket. Don't over pursue and open up massive scramble lanes. Make Willis beat you consistently from the pocket.
2. Dominate the Trenches with the 1-2 Ground Attack
Miami’s front seven got gashed by Las Vegas, and their edge defenders struggled setting a physical line against the run. Even with Kaelon Black managing minor groin tightness, San Francisco's rushing tandem of Christian McCaffrey and Black averaged over 4.5 yards per carry in Melbourne. Grounding and pounding behind Trent Williams will wear down Miami's defense early and open up deep play-action shots for Brock Purdy.
3. Test Miami’s Secondary Beyond Mike Evans
With rookie De’Zhaun Stribling sidelined for 10 weeks following ankle surgery, Kyle Shanahan will deploy Demarcus Robinson in two-receiver sets while shifting Deebo Samuel across boundary and slot roles. Brock Purdy must exploit Miami’s coverage by getting the ball out fast to Mike Evans on isolations while keeping the Dolphins' linebackers guessing with McCaffrey out of the backfield.
Key Matchups to Watch
Nick Bosa & Osa Odighizuwa vs. Miami’s Offensive Line
- The Breakdown: Miami’s offensive line surrendered five sacks and continuous pressure in Week 1. Bosa (86.2 PFF grade in Week 1) and new interior threat Osa Odighizuwa (game-high 5 pressures in Australia) face a Miami unit that struggled on third downs. If San Francisco's front four forces Willis into early third-and-longs, it will be a long afternoon for the Dolphins' offense.
Deebo Samuel vs. Miami Linebacker Jordan Brooks
- The Breakdown: With Stribling out, expect Shanahan to use Deebo as a versatile weapon. Matching Samuel up in space against Miami’s linebackers, particularly Jordan Brooks, will be a focal point. Getting Samuel touches via pre-snap motion and quick screens will keep Purdy in rhythm and force Miami to tackle in space.
Fred Warner vs. De’Von Achane
- The Breakdown: De’Von Achane remains Miami’s most dangerous open field threat out of the backfield. However, he meets All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, who is fresh off a game high 91.1 PFF grade and 11 tackles in Melbourne. Warner’s ability to erase Achane in pass coverage and diagnose stretch runs will eliminate Miami's quick-strike capability.
