Aiyuk's silence cripples trade talks. GMs can't reach the star receiver, leaving the 49ers with a $29 million ghost on their books.
It seems like just about everyone in the NFL is struggling to get a hold of Brandon Aiyuk these days. The former 49ers wide receiver, who is clearly on his way out of San Francisco either via trade or release, appears to be making life difficult for the front office and any team interested in acquiring him. While General Manager John Lynch spent the draft weekend practically begging for the phone to ring, it turns out that even when it does, no one is answering on the other end.
“Give Us a Call”
The desperation in Santa Clara reached a fever pitch during Lynch’s post draft press conference. In a moment that has since gone viral, Lynch went so far as to pantomime picking up a phone, offering a public plea to the other 31 teams: “We’re available. Give us a call.”
However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined The Pat McAfee Show on Monday to explain why that phone remains silent. According to Schefter, the 49ers’ front office is ready to talk, but Aiyuk and his representatives have gone completely MIA.
“They’ve advertised, including this weekend, at every turn that they would trade him for whatever they could get back for him,” Schefter said. “The issue is that teams don’t want to trade for that contract, and they don’t want to trade for that contract when they can’t even discuss it with Brandon Aiyuk.”
A Relationship Beyond Repair
The silence from Aiyuk isn’t exactly a new development. According to All-Pro tight end George Kittle, Aiyuk stopped showing up to the 49ers’ facilities entirely in November. The vanishing act followed a report from The Athletic detailing the team’s decision to void the remaining guaranteed money on his deal due to his continued absence and lack of communication.
While the 49ers successfully voided the guarantees, the contract remains a massive hurdle. There are still three years and $85 million left on the extension he signed before the 2024 season. For a rival team to inherit that kind of financial commitment without being able to even speak to the player is, as Schefter noted, a non-starter.
The Washington Connection
There is a method to Aiyuk’s radio silence. Reports suggest the receiver would prefer to be released outright, allowing him to bypass trade compensation and sign freely with the Washington Commanders. Such a move would reunite him with his college teammate, quarterback Jayden Daniels.
By refusing to facilitate trade conversations, Aiyuk is effectively trying to force Lynch’s hand into a release. However, the Niners remain steadfast and won't simply give him away for nothing.
Life After Aiyuk
San Francisco has already signaled they are prepared for the inevitable. By drafting De'Zhaun Stribling at No. 33 overall and signing veteran Mike Evans, the 49ers have built a roster that no longer has a seat for their former star. For now, the standoff continues. John Lynch is waiting by the phone, but until Brandon Aiyuk decides to pick up his, the talented wideout remains a $29 million ghost on the 49ers' salary cap.
