San Francisco holds leverage as receiver Brandon Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. The 49ers wait for the opportune moment to maximize his trade value.

The situation between the San Francisco 49ers and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk continues to be one of the more complicated storylines of the offseason. While many around the league expect the two sides to eventually part ways, the 49ers do not appear to be in any rush to make that move.

Speculation about Aiyuk’s future has been ongoing for months. The veteran receiver did not play during the 2025 season after suffering significant ACL and MCL injuries in 2024, and tensions between the player and the organization have reportedly lingered since then. At one point last year, Aiyuk essentially cut off communication with the team, creating further uncertainty about his long-term future in San Francisco.

Despite those issues, the 49ers still hold significant leverage in the situation.

According to Adam Schefter, San Francisco is expected to eventually move on from Aiyuk, but the organization isn’t planning to do so immediately. Speaking on ESPN, Schefter explained that the team’s flexibility with Aiyuk’s contract allows them to be patient.

“There’s no guaranteed money left in his contract,” Schefter noted. “So they can hold onto him for the time being. They can hold onto him through the draft and see if they can flip him for a pick at that point in time. They can hold onto him until June.”

That financial flexibility gives the 49ers the ability to wait and see if any potential trade opportunities emerge. Even a late-round draft pick could be viewed as valuable compensation for a player who appears unlikely to be part of the team’s future plans.

San Francisco’s front office has already indicated that a split is coming. General manager John Lynch has previously acknowledged that the team and Aiyuk will likely go their separate ways at some point.

However, waiting could allow the team to maximize whatever value remains.

Some around the league believe that at least a few teams might still be willing to take a chance on Aiyuk, especially if the cost is minimal. A late-round draft pick might be enough for a team looking to see whether the receiver can return to form in a new environment.

The timing could also intersect with interest from other teams searching for receiving help. The Washington Commanders have been frequently mentioned as a possible landing spot, in part because of Aiyuk’s reported connection with quarterback Jayden Daniels. However, there is no indication that Washington is willing to give up significant draft capital to acquire him.

For now, the 49ers appear content to let the situation play out.

By holding onto Aiyuk rather than releasing him immediately, San Francisco keeps open the possibility of gaining something in return. Whether that ultimately results in a trade or simply delays his eventual release remains to be seen.

Either way, the 49ers seem determined to approach the situation on their own timeline that prioritizes leverage and flexibility as the offseason continues.
