While fans have been hopeful, it is unlikely that the 49ers' wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will make any impact for the team this season.

What began as cautious optimism surrounding Brandon Aiyuk’s potential midseason return has steadily dissolved into a familiar weekly refrain: he’s simply not close.

Aiyuk has been sidelined since October 20, 2024, when he suffered devastating ACL and MCL tears in his right knee during San Francisco’s matchup against Kansas City.

The injury immediately set off a long and uncertain recovery timeline, but the process has proven far more complicated than the 49ers initially anticipated.

Early speculation suggested Aiyuk might rejoin the team somewhere between Weeks 6 and 10, a projection that now feels like a distant memory.

We’ve reached Week 12, and any notion of him taking the field remains theoretical at best.

On Monday, Kyle Shanahan once again confirmed that San Francisco would not open Aiyuk’s 21-day practice window, a question the coaching staff has fielded and dismissed for several consecutive weeks.

Even in the most optimistic scenario, the calendar alone renders Aiyuk’s impact negligible.

If San Francisco were to open its practice window next week, the absolute earliest it could return would be Week 15, assuming an aggressive, unlikely one-week ramp-up.

Given the severity of his injuries and the length of his absence, a two-week buildup is a far more realistic expectation, and with the team’s bye looming in Week 14, the timeline becomes even more restrictive.

For fantasy football managers, that timeline is a death sentence. Even if Aiyuk hits the field in Week 15, he’d be doing so after more than a year away from competitive football, just as fantasy playoffs begin.

Snap limitations would be inevitable. Conditioning concerns would be unavoidable. Rust would be guaranteed. In short, he would be unstartable.

This is a harsh fall for a player who posted back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2022 and 2023 and had cemented himself as San Francisco’s true WR1.

His long-term outlook remains bright for the 49ers, and if the team makes a deep postseason run, he could provide a meaningful boost in January, but none of that matters for fantasy purposes.

Fantasy managers clinging to Aiyuk at this stage are doing so out of hope, not logic. With playoff races tightening and every roster spot carrying weight, he is now a luxury no competitive team can afford.

The most likely outcome is that Aiyuk practices late in the season but never actually plays.

The correct move is simple: drop him. Aiyuk’s fantasy season is over, whether he returns to the field or not.
