The 49ers lose their explosive rookie standout to a late-November return window, forcing Kyle Shanahan to rework the offense as the promising deep threat begins a grueling rehabilitation.

The initial optimism surrounding De'Zhaun Stribling’s injury timeline has officially vanished.

Addressing reporters ahead of Wednesday’s practice, San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan confirmed that the standout rookie wide receiver underwent ankle surgery and is expected to miss roughly 10 weeks of the 2026 season. Stribling has officially been placed on Injured Reserve.

Initial reports following the Week 1 win over the Rams held out hope that the No. 33 overall pick could rehabilitate a Grade 2 deltoid sprain without procedure, aiming for a four-to-six-week recovery. However, further medical evaluations determined that surgical repair was necessary to stabilize the joint, which will shut down the explosive second round pick until late November.

A Devastating Blow to a Starlight Rookie Campaign

The news is a brutal pill to swallow for both Stribling and San Francisco's coaching staff. The former Ole Miss star was the undeniable breakout player of training camp and preseason, catching 11 passes for 109 yards in August and earning a starting boundary role in his NFL debut alongside Mike Evans.

"I think he was down," Shanahan said when asked about Stribling's emotional state. "He was hoping that it wouldn't be as bad as it was. He had such a good week of practice, had such a good training camp. I know he was just down. But it'll pass. He'll be back, and he'll be good to go when he gets back."

Making the situation more painful for fans is how the injury unfolded on the field in Melbourne. Stribling briefly left the game in the first quarter after favoring his other ankle. Cleared to re-enter, he came up limping on a non-contact route just a few snaps later and was carted off after logging 21 total snaps.

What a 10-Week Timeline Means for the Offense

A 10-week recovery places Stribling's target return window around Week 12 or Week 13, which means he could potentially make his return for the 49ers' high-profile Sunday Night Football matchup against the Minnesota Vikings in Mexico City on November 22.

In the interim, Kyle Shanahan will lean heavily on his veteran nucleus:

  • Demarcus Robinson & Deebo Samuel: Robinson will see an increased snap count on the outside, while Deebo Samuel remains the primary weapon across slot, backfield, and boundary sets.
  • Activating Depth: Rookies Jacob Cowing and Jordan Watkins will step into game day active roles to provide vertical depth behind Mike Evans.
  • Target Concentration: Expect Brock Purdy to continue funneling passes toward Mike Evans, Christian McCaffrey out of the backfield, and George Kittle as the tight end works back to full conditioning.

With tight end Jake Tonges also ruled out for the season with an MCL injury, San Francisco's offensive depth is being tested early. But if Stribling's rehabilitation stays on schedule, the 49ers could receive a massive offensive boost right in time for their late-season playoff push.
