Kyle Shanahan downplays a sudden practice injury to the rookie breakout star, as San Francisco weighs backfield rotations and veteran health before hosting a high-stakes Miami offense.

The San Francisco 49ers hit the practice field on Thursday ahead of their Week 2 home opener against the Miami Dolphins, bringing a mix of welcome veteran returns, kicker concerns, and a sudden scare at the running back position. While key stars returned to full capacity, all eyes turned to rookie running back Kaelon Black, whose unexpected appearance on the injury report raised immediate questions about Kyle Shanahan’s backfield rotation.

The Kaelon Black Scare: Tightness or Cause for Alarm?

After logging a full session on Wednesday, Black popped up on Thursday’s report as a limited participant due to a groin issue. Given San Francisco's brutal luck on the injury front, a mid-week additions usually trigger major alarm bells.

However, head coach Kyle Shanahan quickly moved to quell panic during an appearance on KNBR, indicating the team was merely exercising precaution.

"No, I think we're just being smart with him," Shanahan explained. "It was a little tight today, so we didn't want to push him too hard."

While Shanahan’s comments offer reassurance, Friday's final practice participation report will determine whether Black carries a game-status designation into the weekend. Should his groin tightness linger, second year back Jordan James would likely suit up as the primary backup behind Christian McCaffrey against Miami.

Why Black’s Availability Matters So Much

The concern over Black’s minor setback highlights just how quickly the third-round rookie has earned the trust of Shanahan and running backs coach Bobby Turner.

For years, the 49ers have operated with a revolving door behind All-Pro Christian McCaffrey, often riding CMC for massive snap counts. But in Week 1’s 27-7 victory over the Rams, Shanahan unveiled a true two-headed monster:

Black actually out-carried McCaffrey 14 to 10 while averaging a crisp 4.6 yards per carry. Not only does this 1-2 punch validate San Francisco's decision to draft Black in Round 3, but it also keeps the 30 year old McCaffrey fresh for the long haul.

Full Veteran Upgrades & Kicker Watch

Outside of Black’s limited session, Thursday's report brought mostly encouraging news for the 49ers' starting lineup:

  • Veterans Upgraded to FP: Christian McCaffrey, Dre Greenlaw, and Trent Williams all returned to full practice after taking planned rest days on Wednesday. Edge rusher Khalid Kareem (shoulder) was also upgraded from DNP to full.
  • Kicker Illness: Kicker Eddy Piñeiro missed his second consecutive practice due to an illness. San Francisco has not yet brought in free-agent kickers for workouts, suggesting optimism that Piñeiro will shake off the ailment before Sunday afternoon.
  • Limited Participants: Joining Black on the limited list were tight end George Kittle (Achilles ramp-up), defensive end Nick Bosa (knee), edge rusher Keion White (back), and fullback Kyle Juszczyk (finger).
