Fred Warner returns at full strength, ready to anchor the 49ers defense. Meanwhile, Brandon Aiyuk's future hangs in the balance as trade talks intensify.

The San Francisco 49ers kicked off their offseason training program Monday at Levi’s Stadium, and the sight of No. 54 moving without a limp was the highlight of the morning. All-Pro linebacker Fred Warner, whose 2025 season was cut short by a gruesome ankle injury, confirmed he is back at full strength with "no restrictions" for the team’s spring workouts.

Warner suffered a broken and dislocated right ankle during an Oct. 12 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. For the first time in his eight year career, the cornerstone of the Niners' defense was forced to watch from the sidelines, missing the final 12 games of the regular season.

"I’m feeling extremely blessed, grateful to be back, feeling great and no restrictions," Warner said Monday. "Just able to jump right in."

The Postseason Tease

The road to recovery actually reached a milestone in January. The 49ers opened Warner’s 21 day practice window on Jan. 13, leading to viral videos of the linebacker moving well on the practice field ahead of the divisional round. While Warner was ultimately a non-participant in the 41-6 loss to the Seattle Seahawks, that week of work was the catalyst for his offseason.

"The fact that I was able to return to practice kind of gave me all the confidence in the world to really attack training during the offseason," Warner noted. "Not having to start from rehab and everything—just going from ground zero, building up just like I would any other offseason. It’s been great."

Warner finished his abbreviated 2025 campaign with 51 tackles, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in just six games. His return is a massive boost for a unit that struggled with communication and consistency in his absence last year.

The Aiyuk "Inflection Point"

While Warner led the way on the field, the shadow of Brandon Aiyuk’s roster status loomed over the facility. Aiyuk was notably absent as the 49ers continue to navigate a fractured relationship with the star wideout.

General Manager John Lynch, speaking at his pre-draft press conference, didn't shy away from the reality that the team is actively seeking a trade partner before potentially resorting to a release.

"Do I think it’s a high probability [to get a trade done]? Likely, no," Lynch admitted. "But is there a chance? Yeah. I think there’s a chance."

Lynch described draft week as a major "inflection point" for Aiyuk’s future. With teams finalized on their draft boards, a club that misses out on a top tier receiver on Thursday night might finally meet the Niners' asking price for the All-Pro.

"We all are in concert on where we’re going with Brandon," Lynch said. "The draft is an opportunity because a lot of things happen on draft week. I think we’ll see it through here."

If no deal is reached by the end of the weekend, the 49ers will likely pivot to a post June 1 release to mitigate the dead money on the salary cap. For now, however, the focus in Santa Clara is on the healthy return of their defensive heartbeat and probably the looming clock of Thursday night.
