Fresh off a dominant win in Melbourne, San Francisco prepares for their home opener while navigating a significant injury to rookie receiver De’Zhaun Stribling against a struggling Miami squad.
Coming off a statement 27-7 victory over the Los Angeles Rams down in Melbourne, the San Francisco 49ers now turn their attention back to Levi’s Stadium for their Week 2 home opener against the Miami Dolphins.
Miami opened its 2026 campaign looking totally helpless against the Las Vegas Raiders. Outside of receiver Caleb Douglas, who looks every bit like a legitimate outside target, Miami’s offense looked functionally stuck in neutral. On defense, the story was even uglier and the Dolphins’ edge rushers looked completely incapable of setting a hard edge and defending the run. Which was nothing like facing Myles Garrett in Melbourne.
Still, with a high profile matchup looming, Kyle Shanahan’s squad must avoid taking Miami lightly in what has all the makings of a classic early season "trap game."
De’Zhaun Stribling Injury Update: Bracing for a Grade 2 Ankle Sprain
The biggest dark cloud hanging over San Francisco's Week 1 victory remains the health of rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling, who is set to miss at least a month due to a deltoid ligament sprain in his left ankle.
Medical evaluations will determine whether Stribling's sprain falls under a Grade 1, 2, or 3 classification:
Grade 1 (Mild Sprain): Typically sidelines an athlete for 1 to 3 weeks with minor tissue strain.
Grade 2 (Moderate Sprain): Generally requires a walking boot or brace for several weeks, with running delayed until 6 to 8 weeks post injury.
Grade 3 (Severe/Complete Tear): Involves a complete ligament rupture and associated bone damage, requiring surgical repair and a minimum 3 month recovery window.
San Francisco's medical staff is likely bracing for a Grade 2 sprain, prioritizing rest and rehabilitation to ensure Stribling can return for the stretch run without risking a long term setback.
