Kyle Shanahan navigates a thinning roster as Deebo Samuel’s hamstring injury sidelines the playmaker, while the undefeated Niners await a potential defensive boost from Nick Bosa's return.
Fresh off a dramatic 32-29 victory over the Seattle Seahawks to stay perfect at 5-0, the San Francisco 49ers turn their attention to a critical Week 6 home matchup. On Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan briefed reporters on the team's latest health report, which of course was headlined by another significant blow to the receiving corps alongside potential good news on the defensive front.
Deebo Samuel to Miss Time with Hamstring Strain
The most concerning news following Sunday's thriller is the loss of wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Samuel suffered a right hamstring strain on an end-around carry in the third quarter, fumbling before remaining on the ground and leaving for the locker room.
"He got it pretty good, so he's going to miss some time," Shanahan confirmed Monday.
Samuel's absence exacerbates an already thin wide receiver room currently missing Ricky Pearsall, Demarcus Robinson, and rookie De'Zhaun Stribling. With Mike Evans operating through a rib issue, Shanahan noted the team down to just four fully healthy wideouts on the active roster. Rookie Jacob Cowing, who briefly left Sunday's game with an ankle tweak, is expected to be fine. Expect San Francisco to promote a practice squad receiver ahead of Week 6 to restore depth behind Evans and Brandin Cooks.
Linebacker Garret Wallow also suffered a hamstring injury against Seattle and will sit out at least a couple of weeks.
Potential Week 6 Returns: Bosa, Juszczyk, Thompson
While the offensive perimeter takes a hit, the 49ers could get key pieces back in time for their showdown with the Washington Commanders.
Defensive end Nick Bosa, who has missed the last three contests with a calf issue, is pushing toward a potential return.
"We know he's got a chance," Shanahan said regarding Bosa's status. "They've all got a chance, but definitely not saying they're good to go right now. We've got to continue to evaluate them throughout the week."
Along with Bosa, fullback Kyle Juszczyk (knee) and defensive tackle James Thompson Jr. (ankle) are tracking in a similar direction. Both will be tested during practice as the team decides their availability closer to game day.
Looking Ahead
With a 5-0 record and a tight hold on first place in the NFC West, San Francisco's depth continues to be tested. Getting Bosa and Juszczyk back into the fold would provide a timely boost as the 49ers prepare to host the Washington Commanders in their next matchup.
