49ers race to secure Trent Williams before the draft with a new offer, but rival teams watch as resolution remains uncertain.
The San Francisco 49ers are working feverishly to resolve their contract standoff with All-Pro offensive tackle Trent Williams ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft, which kicks off next week.
While general manager John Lynch has expressed public optimism that a deal can be reached to keep the anchor of the offensive line in San Francisco, the situation remains fluid. According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, nothing is guaranteed, and rival teams are closely monitoring the developments as the draft approaches.
The Standoff in Phoenix
Speaking at the NFL meetings in Phoenix, Arizona, Lynch struck a cautious tone when asked about the proximity of a resolution.
"Don’t want to make any statements, like, ‘Hey, we’re right there,’ because these things have felt like that before," Lynch said. "But I do feel like we’re in good communication and hopeful."
Despite that hope, La Canfora provided a more sobering update, suggesting the two sides appear no closer to a final agreement on a reworked deal, even as the 49ers ramp up their efforts.
The Latest Proposal
"As we hear it, the 49ers made another push to try to get closure in this situation and sent over a revised contract to Williams within the last few days," La Canfora wrote for SportsBoom. "League sources indicated there is a chance this gets resolved early this week, depending on how comfortable the player is with the latest proposal. And, should the sides not make headway over the coming days, there is potential for this to get sideways."
The reported numbers on the table include:
- Total Guarantees: $36 million over the next two years.
- 2026 Commitment: $24 million to be paid this coming season.
While such a deal would solidify Williams as a top-10 paid offensive lineman, the future Hall of Famer may be seeking a salary that reflects his status as arguably the most dominant tackle in the game, potentially aiming for the $30 million plus annual average seen in recent market setting deals.
Leverage and the Draft
The timing of these negotiations is critical. The 49ers are currently staring down a massive $46.3 million cap hit for Williams in 2026 after declining his option bonus earlier this spring.
"The closer we get to the start of the regular season, the more the 49ers could reasonably conclude that opposing teams will have less appetite to take on a massive salary," La Canfora noted. "Thus perhaps the threat of cutting him could result in Williams opting to take what’s on the table."
However, if a resolution isn't reached by draft night, the 49ers may be forced to look at a "Plan B" at pick No. 27. Names like Alabama's Kadyn Proctor and Utah's Caleb Lomu are increasingly linked to San Francisco in mock drafts as the team prepares for the possibility of life without their legendary left tackle.
