Another ugly win for the Chicago Bears, but that's how Ben Johnson and his team like it.
The Bears went into U.S. Bank Stadium and came out with a 19-17 win over the Minnesota Vikings. It was the franchise's first win over an NFC North opponent this season and it also marked the first win over Minnesota for Caleb Williams.
It was a familiar feeling for Bears fans, as Chicago got out to a 16-3 lead against Minnesota. However, the Vikings once again pulled off some fourth quarter heroics and eventually reclaimed the lead after scoring two touchdowns to make it 17-16 with 50 seconds left.
Then came the kickoff after the Vikings score. Devin Duvernay had a 56-yard kickoff return to put the Bears in prime position for their final drive of the game.
Chicago started on the Minnesota 40-yard line and just had to get into Cairo Santos' range for a game-winning field goal, and the Bears did just that. The Bears didn't pass the ball once, and they didn't need to, as D'Andre Swift ran the ball three times before Santos hit the 48-yard game winner.
The defense stood out in this game, even though the Vikings eventually came back and took the lead.
J.J. McCarthy made multiple mistakes under pressure, throwing two interceptions and finishing with 150 passing yards and one touchdown. Vikings running back Aaron Jones fumbled the ball once but was able to recover it.
The passing attack for Chicago wasn't able to get going, but the main thing was that the Bears didn't turn the ball over through the air. This was massive, especially against a Minnesota pass defense that ranks top 10 in the NFL, allowing 208.1 passing yards per game.
The celebrations in Chicago may be short lived when it comes to the NFC North, as the Detroit Lions could still take the top spot from the Bears. The Lions hold the tiebreaker after the 52-21 win over the Bears in Week 2.
Detroit is 6-3 and plays the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football. A loss would mean that Chicago would have the top spot in the division for now. It's safe to say that Chicago fans could be cheering on the Eagles later tonight.
This is the second time this season that Chicago has relied on a game-winning field goal. The Bears won 25-24 on a game-winner from Jake Moody back in Week 6 versus the Washington Commanders on Monday Night Football.
Chicago heads back to the AFC North to take on the Pittsburgh Steelers next Sunday at noon CT on CBS.
