The Chicago Bears erased any bad memories fans had from last year's 18-15 Hail Mary loss, beating the Washington Commanders 25-24 on Monday Night Football at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.
This time last year, the Bears lost 18-15 on a Hail Mary from Jayden Daniels to Noah Brown on a deflected pass that began a 10-game losing streak that lasted until January of 2025.
Fans in the windy city can now exhale after all the excitement that took place, as Chicago is now 3-2. The Bears got the ball back down 24-22 with 3:07 left and drove the ball all the way down to kicker Jake Moody's field goal range. All the recent roster addition had to do was place the ball between the uprights.
At the beginning of the 2025 season, Moody was still on the San Francisco 49ers. However, he was released after inconsistent play, and the franchise signed Eddy Pineiro in his place. The Bears added Moody to the practice not too long after San Francisco released him.
The young kicker did not have much time to prepare for Monday's game, with the Bears promoting him from the practice squad hours before kickoff in the wake of Cairo Santos appearing as questionable on the injury report with a quad injury.
Moody was nearly perfect, hitting 4-of-5 field goals and 1-of-1 extra points. However, he hit the field goal that mattered the most.
Chicago looked dominant on defense in the first quarter, forcing Daniels to throw an interception in the redzone and stripping the ball away from running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt.
The Bears appeared that there were going to run away with the game in the second quarter, as they went up 13-0 after a one-yard touchdown rush by Caleb Williams.
The team didn't capitalize fully on its turnovers but got takeaways when it counted.
A touchdown pass from Daniels to Chris Moore brought the score back within a touchdown, as the Bears went into halftime with a 13-7 lead.
Chicago was held to three points in the third quarter, and the Commanders scored 10 points to take a 17-16 lead.
More times than not, if you win the fourth quarter, you win the game. That was true for Chicago.
Washington scored a touchdown right at the beginning of the final frame to go up 24-16, but the Bears didn't sweat it. A 55-yard De'Andre Swift touchdown reception brought Chicago back into the game and a late fumble from Daniels gave the Bears just what they needed.
Chicago got the ball back near midfield and did a great job of running down the clock and getting into Moody's range for the win.
The Bears will have a shorter week to prepare for the New Orleans Saints, but they will enjoy this win as long as they can. The Bears and Saints kick off on Sunday at noon CT on Fox.
