Veteran C.J. Gardner-Johnson provides much-needed reinforcements to the Chicago Bears' injury-ravaged secondary after signing with the team.

Bears Sign C.J. Gardner-Johnson to Bolster Depleted Secondary

The Chicago Bears have made a roster move to address their battered secondary, signing veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to the active roster.

Gardner-Johnson visited Halas Hall on Tuesday, and the meeting apparently went well enough for both sides to strike a deal soon after. The 27-year-old brings experience, swagger, and versatility to a defense that desperately needs healthy bodies in the back end.

There are a few familiar faces for Gardner-Johnson in Chicago. He played under Dennis Allen in New Orleans from 2019 to 2021, appearing in 43 games with the Saints. He also overlapped with Bears head coach Ben Johnson during his stint with the Detroit Lions in 2023.

Gardner-Johnson appeared in three games for the Houston Texans earlier this season, but his recent track record speaks for itself. He racked up six interceptions for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022, then matched that total again while helping the Eagles win the Super Bowl in 2024. He’s not far removed from playing his best football, even if he's bounced around between teams this year.

Of course, Bears fans might remember Gardner-Johnson for a different reason — his infamous 2020 scuffle with former Chicago wide receiver Javon Wims, which ended with Wims throwing a punch during a game against the Saints. Gardner-Johnson has never had the cleanest reputation around the league, but right now, the Bears can’t afford to be picky.

Chicago’s secondary has been decimated by injuries. Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon are both on injured reserve, and Tyrique Stevenson may miss yet another week. That would leave the Bears relying heavily on practice-squad cornerbacks — not ideal when facing an explosive Cincinnati Bengals offense with weapons all over the field.

While Gardner-Johnson is primarily a safety, the Bears most likely plan to use him in the nickel role to help offset the loss of Gordon. During his time in New Orleans, he logged most of his snaps in the slot:

  • 2021: 477 slot, 66 box, 9 free safety, 23 corner
  • 2020: 622 slot, 89 box, 2 free safety, 62 corner
  • 2019: 268 slot, 102 box, 69 free safety, 25 corner (Stats via Nicholas Moreano)

Whether the signing pays off remains to be seen, but the Bears had to make a move to patch the weakest part of their roster. At 4–3, the season is far from lost — and Gardner-Johnson could provide the kind of spark this defense has been missing.
