Jaylon Johnson's potential return from a prolonged groin injury could bolster the Bears' struggling secondary against the Vikings' explosive offense.

The Chicago Bears had plenty of good things to talk about with their Friday injury report ahead of the clash with the Minnesota Vikings.

The only players who were listed as out were linebacker T.J. Edwards (hand/hamstring) and rookie wide receiver Jahdae Walker (concussion) out of Texas A&M.

Edwards didn't practice at all on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Walker was unable to practice on Wednesday or Thursday but was limited on Friday. However, he couldn't clear concussion protocol in time to play on Sunday.

Two players were questionable, as defensive backs Jaylon Johnson (groin) and Jaquan Brisker (back) appear to be game time decisions. This is great news for Johnson, who has been out since Week 2 with the injury.

Defensive back Josh Blackwell (concussion), defensive back Kevin Byard (NIR), linebacker Ruben Hyppolite II (knee), defensive lineman Grady Jarrett (NIR), tight end Cole Kmet (back), receiver DJ Moore (shoulder), receiver Rome Odunze (ankle), defensive lineman Dominique Robinson (ankle), cornerback Tyrique Stevenson (shoulder), running back D'Andre Swift (hip) and offensive lineman Joe Thuney (NIR) all didn't carry injury designations.

The importance of the potential return of Johnson from his injury couldn't be understated for the Bears' secondary. Chicago's secondary currently allows the ninth-most passing yards per game in the NFL at 252.3.

Johnson didn't participate in Wednesday or Thursday's practices, but was limited on Friday, meaning there's a chance he plays against the Vikings.

This is especially true since Kyler Gordon hasn't played since Week 7 since suffering that groin injury in the 26-14 win over the New Orleans Saints. Gordon was placed on the injured reserve and hasn't played since.

In Gordon's place, the team signed veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson to man the nickel position in the secondary.

Having Johnson back in some form or fashion would also be great to have someone to cover Vikings wideout Justin Jefferson, even if the Bears' corner was on a snap count. Jefferson has the eighth most receiving yards in the NFL this season at 686.

Johnson is coming off consecutive Pro Bowl appearances in 2023 and 2024. He has been with Chicago since 2020 and recorded seven interceptions in six seasons with the franchise.

He signed a four-year, $76 million extension in 2024, but has only played in one game this season. The groin injury kept him out of the season opener with the Vikings, but he played against the Detroit Lions in Week 2. However, he was placed on IR after the 52-21 loss to Detroit and hasn't seen the field since then.

Fans will have to wait and see whether Johnson sees the field on Sunday, but it would be fantastic addition if he does.
