The Chicago Bears made one move at the NFL trade deadline on Tuesday, bringing in former first-round defensive lineman Joe Tryon-Shoyinka.
The move came after some disappointing news from Chicago's 47-42 win over the Cincinnati Bengals over the weekend, as edge rusher Dayo Odeyingbo suffered a torn Achilles and is out for the year.
Odeyingbo was placed on IR by the Bears on Tuesday. Shemar Turner is also on season-ending IR after suffering a torn ACL in the 30-16 Week 8 loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
In comes Tryon-Shoyinka, who spent the majority of his NFL career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2021-24. He was with the Cleveland Browns this season before being traded ahead of the deadline.
He has played in 74 games with 45 starts for Tampa Bay and Cleveland. He's accounted for 147 total tackles, 15 sacks and 21 TFLs.
The Bears got Tryon-Shoyinka for a sixth-round pick and received a seventh-round pick from the Browns. The Buccaneers selected him in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft out of Washington
Overall, I would give the trade deadline for the Bears a C-.
Adding Tryon-Shoyinka helps at a position of need, but there are still more holes that could've been fixed. He is an experienced pass rusher, but not a standout who is going to magically fix Chicago's sack problems.
At least not on paper.
Regardless, Chicago will probably still need some more help to become more efficient in sacking quarterbacks. The Bears rank 21st in sacks this season, with 17 coming into Week 10.
The secondary is still going to be without Kyler Gordon for a few weeks after he went to the IR with a groin injury. Jaylon Johnson has dealt with the same injury and hasn't played since Week 2.
The special teams could have used some help as well, with 98-yard opening kickoff return touchdown from Charlie Jones and the onside kick blunder that nearly cost Chicago the game on Sunday.
Could General Manager Ryan Poles have made some more moves at the deadline? Absolutely.
However, it doesn't hurt to keep key pieces around, especially when the Bears are right smack dab in the middle of the ever tightly growing NFC playoff race. We even saw the race for the NFC North get tighter on Sunday, as the Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers lost.
We'll see if Poles' lack of deadline moves helps or hurts the Bears in the long run.
