Chicago’s blockbuster deal for the All-Pro tackle left the defensive coordinator giddy, likening the massive roster upgrade to finding a haul of presents under the Christmas tree.
Chicago Bears fans woke up to a pleasant surprise on Thursday morning.
The team traded for Tennessee Titans All-Pro defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons. The Bears sent two first-rounders and one fourth-rounder to the Titans in exchange. Chicago also received a fifth-round pick from Tennessee.
Simmons now joins a defensive line where he'll play alongside his former college teammate, Montez Sweat, from their days together at Mississippi State.
Simmons' production is off the charts. He has 38 total tackles, four sacks, six TFLs, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery this season.
It should be very exciting to watch Simmons mesh with this Bears' defensive line, which currently ranks eighth in the NFL with 19 sacks.
Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen was asked about his reaction to the trade. Allen had a hilarious answer, stating that it was like waking up to presents on Christmas morning.
"Yeah, I think anytime you get an opportunity to add a player of this significance, you know, everybody gets excited," Simmons said. "You know, I mean, it's like waking up on Christmas morning, and you go out, and you see all the presents under the tree, you know, and so then your mind starts to go, my mind starts to go, okay, how can we utilize this guy, you know? What are the things that we can do to, you know, really utilize his strengths?"
If you couldn't tell by how many draft picks the Bears gave up, they are going all in on this season in terms of a Super Bowl run.
You don't send three draft picks for a player, especially two in the first round, if you don't mean business.
The Bears weren't satisfied with last year's playoff run. The team went to the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
They were able to knock the Green Bay Packers out of the playoffs but then lost to the Los Angeles Rams 20-17 in overtime in the next round. The Bears were very close to playing in the NFC Championship Game last season.
On Monday Night Football, the Bears are finally getting their chance to take on the Seattle Seahawks.
If the Bears had beaten the Rams, that's who they would've faced in the NFC Championship Game. The Seahawks came into the matchup off a statement win over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The Seahawks spoiled Kenneth Walker's return to Seattle with a 20-3 win.
We are still awaiting the status of Simmons for the game. We don't know if he's expected to play on such short notice after making the trip to Chicago from Nashville.
The Bears have already taken down one of the two teams that were in the Super Bowl last year. They beat the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football, 30-24.
Now, they are aiming for the reigning Super Bowl Champion. Kickoff at Lumen Field is set for 7:15 p.m. CT on ESPN.
We'll see if the Bears can halt the momentum of the Seahawks.
