Glimpse inside the Bears' uncertain secondary status as key corners remain sidelined with vague return timelines.

If you've been keeping up with the Bears this season, you know that the secondary has been heavily injury prone so far.

It started in the offseason, as Kyler Gordon suffered a hamstring injury that kept him seeing the field for the first four games of the regular season. He made his 2025 debut against the Washington Commanders in Week 6, but was only able to remain healthy for another game before suffering a groin injury and heading to injured reserve.

Jaylon Johnson has also not played much due to a groin injury this season. He has been on the IR since Week 2. Johnson signed a four-year, $76 million contract extension in 2024.

At Wednesday's press conference, head coach Ben Johnson shared an update on both Gordon and Johnson, but it didn't offer much of a timetable for their return. The head coach did reveal that Johnson should be returning to the practice field in the near future.

"We should be able to get them back at some point at the end of the season here," Johnson said. "But kinda to-be-determined on when those clocks will start ticking here. I just saw Jaylon in the weight room. He's excited about where he is right now, and he's hopeful he'll be able to be out on the practice field here in the near future.

Gordon had a solid start to his NFL career, starting in all 14 games in 2022 and recording 71 total tackles, two TFLs and three interceptions. Overall, he has 213 total tackles, five interceptions, 2.5 sacks and 10 TFLs.

Johnson has been with Chicago since 2020 and is a two-time Pro Bowler (2023, 2024). In six seasons, he has seven interceptions, 216 total tackles and 11 TFLs.

In the absence of two of its top corners, Chicago went and signed veteran defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson. Gardner-Johnson spent last season with the Super Bowl-winning Philadelphia Eagles.

He then was traded to the Houston Texans and played in three games before joining the Baltimore Ravens practice squad.

Gardner-Johnson has found new life with the Bears, accounting for 15 total tackles, three sacks and three TFLs in the two games he's played in.

Johnson's answer at the presser on Wednesday doesn't give fans much to go off of. The two corners could be back by the end of the season or not at all.

It looks like we'll just have to wait and see for now.
