Chicago’s relentless scoring attack dismantled Carolina in a historic blowout, fueled by aggressive rookie debuts and a head coach refusing to slow down in pursuit of a championship.
The Chicago Bears beat the Carolina Panthers in Week 1.
They did so by putting up a ridiculous number of points. In fact, it was the most points allowed in a single game in the Panthers' history.
The Bears ended up winning 59-37 on Sunday on the road.
Previously, the most points allowed by the Panthers in a game was 52, back in 2018, in a loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
A few Bears rookies made their debut in the game. Dillon Thieneman led the team with 10 total tackles. Malik Muhammad had an interception in his first Bears game. Ben Johnson recently shared his philosophy on playing rookies early, and it is paying dividends once again.
When the dust finally settled, the Bears had scored eight touchdowns and one field goal. That is the definition of efficiency when it comes to scoring.
Jon Gruden identified a weakness for the Bears to exploit, and it was to run the football to the right. As a whole, Chicago had 291 rushing yards as a team. It's safe to say they made that a priority, just as they did last year.
No matter how many points the Bears scored, it seemed like Johnson was never satisfied.
The head coach wasn't going to apologize for how his offense played. At the post-game press conference, he mentioned how he didn't become a head coach just to be mediocre.
The goal is to have the best scoring offense and compete for a Super Bowl.
"Listen, that'll always be the goal, is we want to be the highest scoring," Johnson said. "We want to have the most wins. We want to win Super Bowls. That's what we do. We didn't get into this profession trying to be mediocre, average. And that's every NFL team. So, that is what it is. You know, we make decisions over the course of a week, what's best for our football team to win the game. That's the most important things and that goes into everything we do."
This is a great mentality to have from Johnson.
The Bears should always try to score as many points as possible each and every week. You never know how many points you'll need to score in a game to win.
If Johnson wants to ensure his team's victory by rattling off a ton of points, that's his problem.
The Bears aren't trying to do this halfway. They want not only to go to the Super Bowl, but to win it and hoist the Lombardi Trophy.
Johnson isn't playing around in his second year with the Bears. That's for certain.
