Andrei Iosivas’ injury creates a new challenge for the Bengals, but it also opens the door for Colbie Young, Dohnte Meyers and others to take on bigger roles in Cincinnati’s offense.
The Cincinnati Bengals will have to adjust their wide receiver rotation after Andrei Iosivas suffered a thumb injury that will keep him sidelined for at least the next four games.
Iosivas was placed on injured reserve following the injury and underwent surgery to repair the damage, per Zac Taylor. His absence creates a notable hole in Cincinnati's receiver room, but it also provides an opportunity for several other players to take on larger roles in the offense.
Iosivas entered the season as Cincinnati's No. 3 wide receiver behind Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Through the first two games, he had been part of the Bengals' rotation and provided another option for Joe Burrow in an offense built around its talented receiving corps.
With Iosivas now unavailable, the Bengals will need other receivers to take on more responsibility while he works his way back.
One player who could benefit from the increased opportunity is Colbie Young. The young receiver has the size and physical ability to give Cincinnati another option on the outside. With more snaps available, Young could see his role expand and have more chances to make an impact in the passing game.
Dohnte Meyers is another player who could see an increased workload. He has continued to develop within Cincinnati's receiver room, and Iosivas' absence could give him an opportunity to show what he can provide with a larger role.
Neither player will be expected to replace Iosivas by themselves. Instead, the Bengals can distribute his snaps among multiple players while continuing to lean on Chase and Higgins as the focal points of the passing game.
That depth could be important for Cincinnati as it moves through the season. The Bengals have invested heavily in their top two receivers, but the offense needs contributions from the players behind them to remain effective over the course of a 17-game season.
Burrow also has other options available in the passing game, including the team's tight ends and running backs, giving Cincinnati different ways to account for the loss.
Iosivas' injury is still a setback for the Bengals, particularly because of the role he had established in the offense. However, it does not leave Cincinnati without answers.
Young, Meyers and the rest of the receiver room now have an opportunity to prove the Bengals have enough depth to withstand the loss of their No. 3 receiver.
If Cincinnati can get consistent production from those players, Iosivas' absence could be managed without forcing the offense to dramatically change its identity because of the depth they have in the room.
