Cincinnati’s star receiver returned to practice in full pads Thursday, a vital step toward clearing concussion protocol as the offense faces mounting injuries before Sunday's matchup.

The Cincinnati Bengals received some encouraging injury news Thursday as star wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase returned to the practice field in full pads ahead of the team’s Week 5 matchup against the Miami Dolphins.

Chase suffered a concussion during Cincinnati’s 22-17 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday and did not return to the game. The injury forced the three-time All-Pro to enter the NFL’s concussion protocol, creating uncertainty about his availability for this weekend’s road matchup.

After missing Wednesday’s practice, Chase was back on the field Thursday, marking a positive step in his recovery. However, he remains in concussion protocol, and his participation does not guarantee he will be cleared to play Sunday. His progress through the remaining steps of the protocol will determine whether he can return to game action.

The timing of Chase’s return is especially important for Cincinnati, which is looking to snap a two-game losing streak and get back above .500 before its Week 6 bye. The Bengals enter Sunday’s contest at 2-2 after consecutive losses to the Pittsburgh Steelers and Jaguars, making the matchup against Miami an opportunity to regain momentum before the break.

Chase’s potential availability becomes even more significant with Tee Higgins’ status still uncertain. Higgins suffered an adductor injury late in Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville and was unable to finish the game. Higgins led the Bengals with 11 receptions for 157 yards against Jacksonville, demonstrating how important he is to the passing game.

If Higgins cannot play Sunday, Cincinnati could be without one of its top two receiving options. That would put additional pressure on Chase to return and give quarterback Joe Burrow a dependable weapon against the Dolphins.

Chase has recorded 21 receptions for 212 yards and three touchdowns through the Bengals’ first four games. While those numbers are below his typical production, his ability to create separation, make plays after the catch and stretch the field remains a crucial part of Cincinnati’s offense.

The Bengals also have other options available, including Dohnte Meyers and Mitchell Tinsley, while rookie Colbie Young is working his way back from a knee injury. However, none offers the same established connection with Burrow as Chase.

Ultimately, Thursday’s practice is an encouraging development for Cincinnati, but the Bengals still need Chase to clear concussion protocol before he can return to the field on Sunday. Friday’s practice should provide another important indication of his progress.

With Higgins’ availability also in question, getting Chase back would be a major boost for a Bengals offense looking to avoid a third consecutive loss.
