Joe Flacco eyes starting roles in free agency but won't discount a Bengals return.

Veteran quarterback Joe Flacco is approaching another pivotal offseason as he weighs his options in free agency. The 41-year-old is still seeking a chance to start in the NFL, but he is not ruling out a return to the Cincinnati Bengals under certain circumstances.

According to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero, Flacco plans to explore opportunities where he can compete for a starting job. However, Pelissero reported that the veteran “will strongly consider returning to Cincinnati if he is only offered backup positions.”

Flacco’s value increased late in the 2025 season after he stepped in during a turbulent stretch for Cincinnati. Following an injury to franchise quarterback Joe Burrow early in the season, the Bengals turned to Flacco after acquiring him in a midseason trade.

The veteran passer delivered several strong performances. In nine appearances with Cincinnati during the 2025 season, Flacco completed 158 of 256 passes (61.7%) for 1,664 yards with 13 touchdowns and four interceptions, posting a 91.0 passer rating and helping stabilize the offense during Burrow’s absence.

Flacco also produced some memorable outings. In one game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he threw for 342 yards and three touchdowns, and later recorded a career-high 470 passing yards with four touchdowns in a shootout loss to the Chicago Bears.

Despite his age, Flacco has made it clear that retirement is not currently on his mind. Addressing speculation about his future after the season, he shut down talk that he might walk away from football.

“I physically still do all the things to get ready for the season,” Flacco said. “I feel like I can physically play.”

Joe Flacco’s Long NFL Career

Flacco has played 17 seasons in the NFL, and his career has included several chapters across the league.

Originally selected 18th overall in the 2008 NFL Draft by the Baltimore Ravens, Flacco spent 11 seasons in Baltimore and became one of the most successful quarterbacks in franchise history. His defining moment came during the 2012 season, when he led the Ravens to victory in Super Bowl XLVII and was named the game’s Most Valuable Player.

After his tenure in Baltimore, Flacco transitioned into a veteran bridge quarterback role. He spent time with several teams, including the Denver Broncos, New York Jets, Philadelphia Eagles and the Cleveland Browns before landing in Cincinnati during the 2025 season.

Even late in his career, Flacco has continued to produce when given opportunities. His performances with the Bengals earned him Pro Bowl recognition as an injury replacement.
