The official start of the new league year for the NFL has arrived, which allows for official signings and the beginning of free agency. General manager Duke Tobin and the Cincinnati Bengals made their first two agreements within the first four hours of the legal tampering period, signing former Seattle Seahawks defensive end Boye Mafe and former Kansas City Chiefs safety Bryan Cook.
Defense is undoubtedly the priority for this Bengals offseason, and this is a great step in the right direction to right its wrongs from last year. More work is to be done, especially after the departures of defensive end Joseph Ossai to the New York Jets and 2024 NFL Sack Leader Trey Hendrickson to the Baltimore Ravens.

Losing him to a division rival, joining three-time NFL Sack Leader TJ Watt and the Single Season Sack Record Holder Myles Garrett, now means superstar quarterback Joe Burrow will have at least six games a year of a nightmare pass rusher lined up against him.
With this in mind, it’s essential that the Bengals' offensive line is at its absolute best next season; in response, news broke of an extension for one of the returning tackles.
Wednesday morning, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that Bengals’ captain and left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. has signed a 2-year, $32 million extension to keep him with the franchise through 2028.
After re-signing veteran offensive guard Dalton Risner, the Bengals are locked in on maintaining the chemistry and continuity that the offensive line was building throughout the second half of 2025. It’s no secret that contract negotiations are not a strong suit of Tobin and the Bengals, as seen by the previous situations with Ja’Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, Hendrickson, and even 2025 rookie first-round pick Shemar Stewart, so the timeliness of this is a wonderful surprise.
This extension provides an extremely promising immediate outlook for the Bengals' playoff aspirations. Extending the most important piece of the offensive line is one thing, but doing it on the first day of the new league year sends a message that they are ready to win now and will do whatever it takes. However, more work needs to be done, as the defense needs to continue to improve tremendously in order to support this stacked offense. Burrow, his weapons, and this improving offensive line have the potential to be the best offense in the league, so if the defensive unit can be even average, the Bengals will have a great chance to contend in 2026.
