The Bengals' star receiver believes the fourth-year cornerback is taking the next step after an impressive start to training camp.

Tempers flared during the Cincinnati Bengals' training camp practice earlier this week as the intensity increased during 11-on-11 drills. A scuffle broke out between Ja'Marr Chase and members of the defense, prompting quick action from the coaching staff and other players to separate both sides. Rather than using the altercation against some of his teammates, Cincinnati's star wide receiver took it as an opportunity to praise a member of the defense.

Chase spoke to reporters following Thursday's practice and praised cornerback D.J. Turner II for his intensity throughout the week. He believes Turner has embraced a more competitive mentality and is using it to take a noticeable step forward this season.

The 25-year-old cornerback appears to be playing with plenty of confidence as he prepares for his fourth NFL season with Cincinnati.

"I think the biggest thing is him playing with a lot of confidence now," Chase said. "He already plays with his feet a lot. I think the biggest thing is just seeing him be a little more aggressive."

The praise carries significant weight considering Chase's reputation has forced him to face each opponent's top cornerback week after week. Turner has embraced the challenge of competing against one of the league's best as preparation for another season.

It appears the preparation is paying off. Turner enters 2026 with heightened expectations after showing flashes during his first three seasons with the Bengals. Chase even said Turner could be Pro Bowl-bound if he exceeds or even replicates last year's production.

On the scuffle, Chase said it simply comes down to players wanting not only to better themselves but also the teammates they line up against. He believes an altercation like that is a sign that everyone is pushing each other to practice harder and improve.

That's what it is all about for Turner. His speed and athleticism have never been questioned since he was drafted in 2023, but many believe he has yet to reach his full potential. His improved confidence has been evident throughout the first week of training camp, a promising sign for the Bengals as they look for someone to earn the assignment of covering opposing teams' top wide receivers.

Going against Chase and Tee Higgins every day gives Turner and the rest of the secondary an opportunity to compete against the best throughout training camp. If Turner continues stacking days like Saturday's impressive performance, the Bengals could be looking at their next lockdown cornerback on the outside. The competitiveness is clearly there in Cincinnati this offseason, but the question remains whether it will translate to the field when Week 1 arrives next month.
