The Cincinnati Bengals (6-10) will host the Cleveland Browns (4-12) on Sunday in a game that has no playoff implications, but will reveal truths for both teams.
The Bengals are looking to end the season on a three-game win streak after beating the Miami Dolphins 45-21 and the Arizona Cardinals 37-14 in Weeks 16 and 17, respectively. Meanwhile, the Browns will try to beat another AFC North rival after defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers 13-6 in Week 17.
Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow has earned his money over the last two games, tossing 300-plus yards over each of them while combining for six touchdowns and no turnovers. The team's defense, which ranks 31st in football with 29.5 points allowed per game, also played better than it usually has this year.
On the other hand, Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders has not reached 200 yards passing in a game since Dec. 7, when he logged 364 passing yards along with three touchdowns and one interception in a 31-29 loss to the Tennessee Titans. However, the former Colorado Buffalo has completed at least 69 percent of his passes in each of the last two contests.
The Bengals are in the more difficult position, as a loss would be another disappointment in their third-straight non-playoff campaign, while a win would be them doing what they should do. Conversely, the Browns could enter the offseason with newfound excitement if Sanders delivers a quality performance.
How will Sunday's game play out?
Cleveland Browns pass-rusher Myles Garrett (95). © Ken Blaze-Imagn ImagesBurrow, who had his third injury-shortened season this year and has taken 211 sacks over 76 career games, must be wary of superstar Browns defensive end Myles Garrett. The 30-year-old leads the NFL with 22 sacks and is one away from breaking the NFL's single-season record, held by both former New York Giants star Michael Strahan and Pittsburgh Steelers pass-rusher T.J. Watt (22.5).
Burrow insisted during Wednesday's press conference that he won't avoid sacks simply to prevent Garrett from breaking the record.
"I'm certainly not gonna overcompensate either way. I'm not gonna go out of my way to not let him get the record, and I'm not gonna go out of my way to let him get the record either," the 29-year-old said. "I'm gonna go play football. There's gonna be situations where a sack is the best of the bad outcomes of that play, and maybe I take one. There's gonna be other situations where I'm about to get sacked and I need to throw it away..."
If Burrow avoids getting constantly sacked by Garrett and company, he'll have a better chance of getting the ball to skill-position stars Ja'Marr Chase, Tee Higgins, and Chase Brown. If not, then Cleveland's chances of winning will increase.
The game will start at 1:00 p.m. EST on CBS.
