Perfect accuracy from distance and a historic 20-kick streak have secured September honors for Cincinnati’s specialist, placing him one swing away from etching his name into franchise history.

When thinking about the Cincinnati Bengals, the first things that come to mind are usually a high-powered offense and, this season, a much-improved defense.

But one player who has gone a bit overlooked through the first month of the season has been kicker Evan McPherson.

McPherson has quietly put together one of the best starts of his career, making all eight of his field-goal attempts through the first three games of the season. He has also converted all eight of his extra-point attempts, giving him 32 points on the season, which ties him for the most among NFL kickers this season.

He’s already made five kicks from 50-plus yards, including a long of 58 yards. His consistency has given the Bengals another reliable weapon in games where points can be difficult to come by.

That impact has not gone unnoticed around the league.

McPherson was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month for September, earning the honor for the second time in his career. His first came in December 2021, when he was in the middle of his first NFL season. The last Bengals player to win a monthly award was Joe Burrow back in January 2025.

This time around, McPherson earned the award after playing a key role in Cincinnati’s 2-1 start to the season.

The Bengals have relied on McPherson to capitalize on scoring opportunities, and he has delivered when his number has been called.

His start is also a continuation of a turnaround that began after a difficult 2024 season. He has worked tirelessly to put that season behind him, and it has paid off greatly.

After struggling with consistency that season, McPherson entered 2025 looking to regain the form that made him one of the NFL’s most reliable kickers early in his career. Now, he has started 2026 with the kind of consistency the Bengals have come to expect from him.

And with each successful kick, McPherson is getting closer to a piece of franchise history. He has made 20 consecutive field-goal attempts dating back to Week 11 of last season, putting him within striking distance of the Bengals’ all-time record of 21 consecutive made field goals.

If he continues his current run, McPherson could match the record with his next successful attempt.

For a team that has received plenty of attention for its offense and defense this season, McPherson has quietly provided another important piece. His early-season consistency has already earned him league-wide recognition, and he now has a chance to add his name to the Bengals’ record book.

He'll have a chance to tie or break the record this weekend against the Jaguars.
