Two of Cincinnati's top draft picks continued building momentum Monday, making plays on both sides of the ball during the team's first padded practice.
Day 5 of training camp for the Cincinnati Bengals brought the emergence of two rookies who turned in standout performances. The team practiced in full pads for the first time this summer, and the urgency and aggressiveness were on full display.
On one side of the ball, rookie wide receiver Colbie Young made several spectacular plays on the outside. The fourth-round pick out of Georgia is making a push for a starting role in his first NFL season, and he showed what he brings to the table on Monday morning.
The 6-foot-4, 218-pound receiver adds even more length to the Bengals' wide receiver room, and his most notable play from Monday's practice was a ladder-climbing catch over a defender along the sideline. He also added a red-zone touchdown from Joe Flacco, using his big frame to create separation for the score.
Young vocalized his appreciation for Cincinnati when he spoke with reporters following practice, saying he believes he's one of the luckiest receivers to be drafted this year. He said the opportunity to learn from Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins will only help his game, and he'll be ready to perform whenever his number is called.
"I've got two Hall of Famers in front of me who I get to learn from," Young said.
On the other side of the ball, rookie cornerback Tacario Davis made his presence known in the Bengals' secondary. Cincinnati's third-round pick out of Washington is also looking to carve out a starting role for himself in a cornerback room with some questions entering the season.
Davis' play of the day came during 11-on-11 drills, and ironically, it was against Young. He stayed on Young's hip deep down the field and nearly came away with an interception, going high to break up the pass. He told reporters afterward that the play was simply average, saying it would have been a great play if he had reeled in the interception.
Davis provides much-needed size to the roster at 6-foot-4 and 194 pounds while pairing his frame with speed and athleticism. He may be more of a backup to begin his career, but don't be surprised if he sees a multitude of snaps in Week 1.
Both Young and Davis will be names to continue monitoring as training camp rolls on and the preseason schedule approaches. It's only the beginning for the rookies in a Bengals uniform, and they have the talent to become household names in Cincinnati if they continue to develop.
