Former Buffalo Bills tight end Tommy Sweeney is the centerpiece of a scary situation in the camp of the New York Giants, as during a Wednesday workout Sweeney suffered what the team is terming a "medical event."
Sweeney required medical attention and was carted off the field following his participation in a rehab session. The Giants medical team, under the supervision of both head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen, who witnessed the event, moved a shirtless Sweeney on to a cart, and then transported him back to the locker room.
The Giants are now saying that following his collapse, Sweeney is in "stable'' condition.
Sweeney signed a one-year deal to jump from Buffalo to join the Giants in free agency this season. A native of New Jersey, he entered the league as a seventh-round pick of the Bills in 2019 coming out of Boston College standout.
He spent the first four years of his career in Buffalo, appearing in a total of 24 games while having caught 18 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown while playing behind standout Dawson Knox.
Sweeney is presently locked into a competition for a backup job with the Giants, who acquired former Pro Bowl tight end Darren Waller in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders this offseason, and who also have a solid starting-caliber tight end in young Daniel Bellinger.
