Tyler Bass' 2025 season is done before it ever got started.
On Monday afternoon, Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott announced that Bass would be out for the year after having surgery.
"He ended up getting surgery this past week here, so he is, basically, out for the season," McDermott told media during his Monday press conference.
"He was dealing with [his injury]; it wasn't going away. We thought it was going away, then it wasn't going away. He tried to get himself back ready. And so, the decision to get surgery was almost made up for him. So that's the decision and that's what we went with."
Bass suffered a left hip/groin issue during training camp. He attempted to come back before the start of the season, kicking in the third preseason game of the year. After making three of four field goal attempts during the game, many believed Bass would be ready to go to start the year. But that wasn't the case.
Bass suffered a setback after the game and was placed on injured reserve before Week 1 against Baltimore. Since that day, he had yet to make any sort of significant step towards returning.
To cover for his absence, the Bills signed veteran kicker Matt Prater to a one-year deal. This season Prater has gone 17-19 on Field Goal attempts, including a long of 52 yards against the New York Jets. On extra points, he's 34-37, but has missed kicks in back-to-back weeks.
With the news of Bass being out for the year, the Bills will have to rely on Prater not only for the last five weeks of the season, but into the playoffs as well.
Bass currently has two years remaining on the four-year deal he signed back in 2023. Over the next two seasons, he has cap hits of $4.97M and $5.32M, respectively.
