Bills Named Top Fit for Controversial Ed Oliver Replacement cover image

Could the Buffalo Bills replace defensive tackle Ed Oliver with this controversial star?

The Buffalo Bills lost defensive tackle Ed Oliver for the foreseeable future thanks to a torn bicep, a major blow to their defense.

The Bills didn't make any moves at the trade deadline to address the issue, but they could explore the free-agent market to try and find a replacement.

Bleacher Report's Kristopher Knox has offered a rather controversial solution for Buffalo, pitching the idea of the team signing Christian Wilkins.

"The Buffalo Bills, who recently placed defensive tackle Ed Oliver and defensive end Michael Hoecht on injured reserve, should see if Wilkins is in playing shape," Knox wrote.

The Las Vegas Raiders released Wilkins during the summer because they were dissatisfied with the way he was rehabbing his foot injury, and he apparently also caused some friction in the locker room when he allegedly kissed a teammate on the head.

There is no question that Wilkins is a good player when he is healthy. During his last season with the Miami Dolphins in 2023, he racked up 65 tackles and nine sacks, and the year prior, he registered 98 tackles, 3.5 sacks and six passes defended.

Wilkins has always been a good run stopper, but he also appeared to be developing as a pass rusher before his injury after just five games with the Raiders in 2024.

But would the Bills really add him given his health situation, his evidently contentious locker room behavior and his history with Josh Allen?

Wilkins and Allen were involved in a couple of scuffles during Wilkins' days with the Dolphins, so you would imagine that the star quarterback would be a bit apprehensive about allowing him into the building.

That being said, Allen is a team-first player, so if Wilkins can help the Bills win this year, perhaps he would be alright with it. But we don't even know if Wilkins is healthy.

Maybe Buffalo will simply roll with Larry Ogunjobi and DaQuan Jones as its main two guys on the interior with Jordan Phillips and rookie Deone Walker also contributing in the rotation.

The Bills are 6-2 on the season and have won two games in a row to bounce back from a two-game losing streak. They will face Miami on Sunday.
