Buffalo Bills undrafted free agent Kani Walker ignited the preseason opener with a brilliant interception, proving he possesses the instincts and tenacity required to secure a permanent defensive role.
The Buffalo Bills had some young players stand out on defense in the team's 29-14 win over the Carolina Panthers in Saturday's preseason opener.
Second-rookie TJ Parker recorded a sack of Panthers quarterback Kenny Pickett in his NFL debut. Cornerback Kani Walker, who the Bills signed in the spring as an undrafted free agent, recorded his first interception.
Walker made a brilliant move with about six minutes to go in the fourth quarter, recognizing a scene play before the ball was snapped.
He sprinted to get in the right position before recording an interception of Panthers quarterback Kyle Trask.
When speaking to reporters after the game, Walker said he was thankful for the opportunity to play in the fourth quarter. He said he had no plans to stop pushing for a spot on the Bills.
"I definitely was still processing that moment, and honestly, it was just like a thank you to my opportunity, and thank you for everything that has come to me," Walker said, via the Bills' website.
"I'm thankful for the hard times that I've had, and thankful for the moments that I learned because I've been through a lot, and I don't stop, and I'm never going to choose to stop, and I'm gonna continue going."
Walker started his college career with Louisville in 2021. He transferred to Oklahoma in 2022, spending three seasons with the Sooners. The six-foot-two, 204-pound cornerback transferred to Arkansas in 2025, recording 52 tackles, one tackle, 11 passes defensed, and one interception.
Walker believes his hard work in OTAs and training camp paid dividends during Saturday's contest. He knows he still has work to do to make the 53-man roster.
"Coming out here every single day, I feel like [my work] has been paying off," Walker said. "But I still have room to grow. That's just one of those heartfelt moments. That was a lovely moment to have, especially just to prove who I am to the people."
Walker could be a gem for the Bills if he winds up making the 53-man roster this year. He'll need to show consistency when Buffalo travels to the Cleveland Browns next week.
