Roster cuts begin with a shock as veteran wideout Mecole Hardman Jr. headlines a list of early departures, thinning the field ahead of Sunday’s final deadline.
The Buffalo Bills have until 6pm on Sunday, August 30 to get the roster down to 53 players. With the final preseason game having come and gone, however, the team has already begun that process.
On Saturday afternoon, the Bills announced that 13 players have been released.
The biggest name on the first list is wide receiver Mecole Hardman Jr. The veteran receiver had a strong training camp and seemed to be in line to make the team as the 6th wide receiver and punt returner. A pair of poor outings, which included multiple drops, sealed his fate.
It's possible that he is brought back to the practice squad as an insurance policy player, but that depends on who else becomes available around the league.
The other 12 players don't come as much of a surprise as they were all longshots to make the team without extraordinary training camps. Some, however, like undrafted free agent offensive lineman Bruno Fina, are strong candidates to be signed back to the practice squad.
The rest of the first cuts, which you can see below, include three wide receivers, two offensive lineman, three linebackers, and three defensive backs.
With 13 players gone, Buffalo has 24 more players to let go to get down to 53. There's also the possibility they let go even more if there are players that get released that they may be interested in bringing in. So, just because a player makes the initial 53-man roster, it doesn't mean they'll be on the roster come Week 1 against the Houston Texans.
