Kyle Allen secures the backup quarterback role while roster hopefuls battle rain and drops in a high-stakes preseason clash that clarified Buffalo’s looming final cut decisions.
The Buffalo Bills coasted to yet another win in their preseason campaign, beating the Cleveland Browns 31-7 on a rain-soaked day on the shores of Lake Erie.
Nearly all of the team's starters sat after they took part in the join practice with Cleveland on Thursday, but that doesn't mean the game wasn't important to watch. There's the left guard position that still needs a winner, the backup quarterback battle hadn't been decided yet, and who will round out the roster when the time comes to cut down to 53?
Here are the winners and losers from the Bills preseason win.
Buffalo Bills Winners & Losers: Preseason Week 2
Winner - Kyle Allen: If he didn't solidify himself as QB2 last week, Kyle Allen took the job with his play on Sunday. Despite rain and a wet football, Allen threw the ball well in his half of the game on Saturday. Allen finished 10-of-12 for 128 yards and a touchdown. He also orchestrated an impressive four-play, 62-yard drive in the final minute of the first half to put the Bills up 14-7 heading into the locker room.
Loser - Toriano Pride Jr.: When you're trying to make a roster as a depth cornerback, getting called for pass interference for the second week in a row isn't going to help your chances.
Winner - Tyler Bass: After missing a 45-yard field goal last week, Bass was perfect in Cleveland. He finished 4-4 on extra points, and added a 52-yard field goal for good measure in the third quarter
Loser - Mecole Hardman Jr.: Sure, it was raining, but drops are drops. Hardman had two big drops on third down in the first half that ended drives for the Bills. The 6th wide receiver spot is still up for grabs, and though Hardman Jr. had a touchdown on a screen pass, he didn't pull away in a job that many feel is his to lose right now.
Winner - Jordan Hancock: He's not going to challenge Dee Alford for a starting role in the defense, but Hancock is making it known he's a player that can be trusted on the field. He, again, provided solid coverage all afternoon, and finished with two tackles and one pass defense. That pass happened to be on third down, ending a Browns drive.
Loser - Kaleb Elarms-Orr: The rookie entered the preseason with a chance to take over the starting inside linebacker job next to Terrell Bernard. While he wasn't terrible on Saturday, he didn't look the part of a starting linebacker. By not playing, Dorian Williams took a major step towards securing that week 1 starting role against Houston. Still, Elarms-Orr is certain to keep the pressure on him.
Winner - Ja'Mori Maclin: He had a fantastic one-handed catch against the Panthers in week 1, and Ja'Mori Maclin followed it up with a 71-yard touchdown where he took a pass from Shane Buechele and used his speed to get away from defenders. He finished with two catches and 108 yards and a touchdown. He's not going to make the final roster, but it might be safe to say he's earned himself a spot on the practice squad to continue his development.
