The Buffalo Bills have re-signed one of their own.
On Friday, the team announced that it was signing safety Damar Hamlin to a one-year deal to return to the team.
A sixth-round pick out of Pittsburgh in 2021, Hamlin has spent his entire five-year career with the Bills. He became a free agent for the first time this offseason, but returns to the team where he's played 53 games.
Over the course of his career, Hamlin has tallied 185 total tackles, nine passes defended, eight tackles for loss, two interceptions, and 1`.5 sacks.
After starting 14 games in 2024, Hamlin was limited to just five games last season. He suffered a pectoral injury in October that led to his being placed on injured reserve. Hamlin returned to practice during the playoffs, but didn't see the field the rest of the year.
With Hamlin returning, the Bills add a veteran safety who's familiar with the organization. However, despite that familiarity, Hamlin will be a part of a defense that will learn a new system under new defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.
As far as where he fits in the lineup, Hamlin comes in with a likely fight to not only get playing time, but even just make the roster.
After earning a starting safety role in 2024, Hamlin was replaced by Cole Bishop and a combination of Taylor Rapp and Jordan Poyer in 2025. Now, he joins a safety room that includes not only Bishop and the returning Sam Franklin Jr., but new additions like Geno Stone and C.J. Gardner-Johnson.
It's speculation at this point, but if Hamlin is going to make the roster in 2026, it's likely going to be because of his ability on special teams. In his five seasons, Hamlin has 397 special teams snaps and appeared in at least 35% of the snaps in three of those years.
