A Buffalo Bills defensive tackle has been suspended for three games.

Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis has been suspended for the first three games of the season for violating the NFL's substances of abuse policy. Mathis is entering his second year with the Bills after appearing in six games for them in the 2026 season.

Mathis didn't have a major role in Buffalo's defense, finishing with 13 total tackles. He spent his first three seasons with the Washington Commanders, where he recorded 25 total tackles, two tackles for loss, a quarterback hit, a pass deflection, and a fumble recovery.

The 28-year-old is on a one-year contract with the Bills, making $1.2 million with $25,000 guaranteed and a $25,000 signing bonus.

He is a depth piece on the defensive line for Buffalo, so his absence shouldn't hurt their defense too much.

The Bills' defensive line will rely on Ed Oliver from the inside, who was dominant in three games in the 2025 season before going down with a season-ending injury. In those games, Oliver recorded 12 total tackles, seven tackles for loss, three sacks, and a forced fumble.

Off the edge, Buffalo will lean on free agency to sign Bradley Chubb, who inked a three-year, $43.5 million deal. They will also be expecting a contribution from second-round selection TJ Parker.

Chubb is coming off a solid year with the Miami Dolphins, as he posted 47 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery.

Parker could be an impactful player in his rookie campaign after three productive seasons at Clemson. In the 2023 season, Parker played at a high level, finishing with 32 total tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery.

In 2024, Parker had his best season, posting 57 total tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks, six forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. His numbers dipped in the 2025 season, as he had 37 total tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss, five sacks, and three fumble recoveries.

With Chubb and Parker as new edge rushers for the Bills, they will look for their defense to play at a high level under defensive coordinator Jim Leonhard.

Although it's disappointing that Mathis will be out for the first few games of the season, Buffalo has a talented defensive line led by Oliver, Chubb, and Parker.
