Every team has a weakness, even the best of the best, and that includes the Buffalo Bills. For the past five seasons, even though the Bills never made it to the Super Bowl game, they have consistently been perennial Super Bowl contenders.
While Buffalo possesses one of the more dynamic offenses with quarterback Josh Allen at the helm, the defense, who at one point was one of the best, has taken quite a hit.
Key members like Jordan Poyer (who to the Bills' practice squad) and Von Miller aged, it let Tremaine Edmunds walk away to Denver and Matt Milano has only played nine games in the past two seasons.
Not only that, key parts to the secondary will start the season either less than 100% or watching from the sidelines.
Cornerback Tre’Davious White is battling a groin injury, and 2025 first round corner, Maxwell Hairston is dealing with a knee issue – getting placed on injured reserve.
Hairston was drafted after running the fastest 40-yard-dash at the NFL Combine, and it was expected that he was going to serve a major role in this defense.
To make matters worse, top cornerback Christian Benford is also dealing with a groin injury – though there’s a chance he plays on Week 1 against the Baltimore Ravens.
However, even if Benford does play the majority of the game, is it even worth it at this point? Groin injuries have always managed to linger if not treated properly, and letting Benford play this early in the season with such a risk, can bring on more damage.
One concerning factor for the Bills is that last season, Buffalo’s points allowed per game went up three points from 2023 to 2024. And since there’s already a concern heading into the season, while not at 100%, it can’t afford to have a slow start to the season – especially with the hype train surrounding the New England Patriots this season.
If Buffalo needs anything currently, it’s Josh Allen working his usual magical wonders with the football.
Fresh off signing a shiny extension, an MVP, a new endorsement and a wedding band around his finger, the vibes are at an all-time high for the eight year veteran. But what would make it more special for him is the Super Bowl Championship that has constantly evaded him.
Despite all the success, the Bills have still yet to make it past the AFC Conference Championship, but if the defense doesn’t hold up, the city of Buffalo may have to wait even longer to get its first professional championship in the four major sports.
