Wrecking crews have begun dismantling "The Ralph," ending a 52-year era of legendary memories. As the power fades, Western New York bids an emotional farewell to its historic home.

It's truly the end of an era in Buffalo. With the final touches being put on the Buffalo Bills' new stadium across the street, the old Highmark Stadium, known fondly by many as The Ralph, is being torn down.

Last Friday, power was officially turned off at the stadium the team called home for 52 years. This week, construction crews started the teardown.

The full demolition isn't expected to be done until next spring. However, recent videos and images show dismantling of the stadium is already happening.

Nothing But A Memory

Everyone knew this day was coming, but it doesn't stop a floodgate of emotions from flowing.

For over 50 years, Bills fans have entered the gates of The Ralph for games featuring legends like Jim Kelly, OJ Simpson, Bruce Smith, Thurman Thomas, and, more recently, Josh Allen. From thrilling comebacks to heartbreaking defeats, every Bills fan in Western New York has a memory of attending a game at what was once one of the oldest stadiums in the NFL.

For me, it's about the dates with my wife, the games with my dad, and the afternoons with my closest friends. It's the high school football championships that took place on that field (which won't be at the new stadium for the foreseeable future), the swirling winds, and the rumbling of the bleachers on third down.

There truly was nothing like experiencing a Bills home game that felt more like a college atmosphere than anything else. Generations of fans will only have pictures, videos, and their memories to remember what a fun environment the stadium was to not only watch a football game, but also hang out.

Whether you called it Rich Stadium, The Ralph, The Cap, or Highmark, it’s history now.
