The Super Bowl champion’s family addresses his tragic death at age 38, highlighting potential CTE struggles while urging others to seek help for mental health and invisible battles.
Some sad news to report as former Buffalo Bills offensive lineman Jordan Devey has passed away.
He was 38 years old.
First reported by Jeremy Tombs of Fox 13 in Salt Lake City, Devey died by suicide.
"We believe that he possibly suffered from CTE," Jordan's mother, Leslie Devey, told the outlet.
The family had hoped to be able to test and find out for certain if he suffered from the brain disease. Unfortunately, they say, the condition of the way he died will prevent them from having his brain tested and getting that answer.
Devey was undrafted out of Memphis in 2013, signing with the Baltimore Ravens out of college. After being released, he played for the New England Patriots from 2013 to 2014, where he won a Super Bowl.
He would have a one-year stint with the San Francisco 49ers in 2015 before spending three seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2016-2019. His final two years were spent with the Raiders in 2019 and the Bills in 2020. With Buffalo, Devey played in just one game: Week 7 against the New York Jets, playing just two snaps.
With his death, Levey leaves behind his wife and four children. According to his family, he was the "ultimate family dad".
Levey was an organ donor so that he would help those in need of transplants after his passing. Still, his family is hoping to use his passing as a way to express the importance of seeking help if you need it.
"We want people to understand that it’s okay to reach out,” Leslie said. "That help is there - and there’s nothing wrong with you for reaching out. You’re not fighting the battle alone."
