The Buffalo Bills are adding another coach to Joe Brady's staff.
According to a new report, former Penn State star quarterback Trace McSorely is leaving his alma mater to take a job with the Bills.
First reported by Daniel Gallen of 247sports, the move was confirmed by his sources on Thursday. By publishing, McSorely's profile had been removed from the Penn State football website.
As a player for the Nittany Lions, McSorely was viewed as a top quarterback in the Big Ten. In three seasons as the starting quarterback, he had a record of 31-9 while throwing for 9,899 yards, 77 touchdowns, and just 25 interceptions. In addition to the air game, McSorely was able to produce with his legs, rushing for 30 touchdowns.
His played made him a fifth-round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft by Baltimore. He played with the Ravens for the first two years of his career, even playing in a few games due to injury.
His only start would come in 2022 with the Arizona cardinals, a 19-16 overtime loss to Tampa Bay. From there, he would spend time on the practice squads for Pittsburgh, Chicago, and New England. After being released by the Washington Commanders in 2024, McSorely joined James Franklin's staff at Penn State as an assistant quarterbacks coach.
After Franklin was fired, new head coach Matt Campbell chose to keep him on staff. However, an offer from Brady and the Bills led to the decision to leave.
As of writing, Buffalo has yet to confirm the hiring or what role McSorely will play on the staff. What is known is the past connection between Brady and McSorely.
In 2015 and 2016, Brady was a graduate assistant on Franklin's staff. During those two years, he worked close with McSorely, including the 2016 season that saw Penn State win the Big Ten and make it to the Rose Bowl.
