Josh Allen explains the throwing mechanics he's working to refine, including how his non-throwing arm affects his balance, power and rotation.
Josh Allen is working to fine-tune his throwing mechanics as the Buffalo Bills look to keep their offense rolling, with the quarterback revealing some of the adjustments he's focused on during the team's stay in California.
Speaking to reporters on Wednesday on the campus of UC Irvine, Allen discussed working with people to help him refine his mechanics, including the role his non-throwing arm plays in his overall throwing motion. The Bills quarterback said the process has involved plenty of discussion as he looks for ways to improve his balance, power and rotation.
“It's something that's [been a] lot of debate over the last couple weeks within myself and a lot of guys that have been helping out here, whether it's Shane [or] Kyle,” Allen said.
Allen explained that his left arm plays an important role in maintaining balance and generating power when he throws. He's trying to find the right position for it while making sure he can rotate properly through his throwing motion.
“It's just finding that balance and being able to rotate and actually throw into your left side,” Allen said. “And that's what we're working on.”
The discussion comes after Allen said, following Buffalo's game against the Los Angeles Rams, that he wanted to work through some mechanical issues. He clarified that the opportunity to work with Chris S. during the team's West Coast stay was already planned, rather than something arranged specifically because of the team's recent performance.
Allen also suggested that the goal isn't to overhaul his throwing motion. Instead, he's trying to make small adjustments that help him deliver the ball consistently without getting caught up in mechanics once the game begins.
“I feel like I'm coming out here throwing the ball well in that second half, I just kind of turn my mind off and played football,” Allen said. “And I think that's kind of what it's getting back to.”
Buffalo's franchise quarterback acknowledged that mechanics are something every player at his position has to work through during a season. While there are ways to improve consistency and timing, Allen knows he can't afford to think through every movement while trying to make plays against an NFL defense.
He also spoke about how quarterbacks can deliver the ball in different ways depending on the situation. The key is finding a repeatable motion that allows them to get the football to the right spot on time.
“You can deliver it a lot of different ways,” Allen said. “There's a lot of ways to skin a cat, as they say, right? It's no different with the throwing motion.”
Buffalo will hope the work pays off as Allen and the offense continue to build on the second-half performance against Los Angeles. With the Bills staying on the West Coast rather than returning to Buffalo between games, the team has an opportunity to focus on improving before Sunday's game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
