Josh Allen and three other Buffalo Bills players were fined by the NFL after the Week 9 win over the Chiefs. Here’s what led to the penalties and how much they cost.
The NFL has levied fines against four Buffalo Bills for actions during the team’s Week 9 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. One of those players happens to be star quarterback Josh Allen.
According to the NFL, Allen made what the league determined to be a “violent gesture” during the game which cost him $14,491. The action in question came after a one-yard touchdown run in the third quarter during a celebration with wide receiver Elijah Moore.
Though you can’t really see it in the footage below, it’s believed to be a throat slashing gesture. Moore also made a similar gesture, resulting in a $13,888 fine for himself.
The two other Bills who were fined during the game were cornerback Christian Benford and running back Ty Johnson. Benford was fined $14,714 for an illegal use of his helmet after taking down Chiefs receiver Xavier Worthy. Johnson was fined $10,778 for a facemask penalty in the second quarter. Both of those fines fall under the league’s “unnecessary roughness” category for punishment.
The four fines against the team are the most that have been levied against the Bills from a single game this season. Prior to it, only two other players were hit: Dorian Williams was docked $7,989 for unnecessary roughness after Week 4 and a tripping penalty cost Joey Bosa $12,172 after Week 8’s win against Carolina.
In total, Bills players have been fined $73,941. It’s also pretty fitting that the team’s best player would also be the leader in the clubhouse in fine money.
Despite the financial penalties, however, the Bills have to be feeling pretty good coming off their win against Kansas City to keep pace with the New England Patriots in the AFC East. Up next is another game that will, without question, be tougher than it appears on paper. The Bills are in South Beach for a division matchup with the Miami Dolphins.
Buffalo is already 1-0 against Miami this year after winning 31-21 on September 18.
