Stefon Diggs reunion rumors are heating up after social media activity from current Bills players. But would a return to Buffalo actually work?
The idea of Stefon Diggs returning to the Buffalo Bills is not going away.
Over the past few weeks, social media has been filled with speculation after an account that many believe is connected to Diggs began posting highlights from his Bills days and hinting at a reunion. Current Buffalo players have only added fuel to the fire. James Cook interacted with one of the posts, and left tackle Dion Dawkins jumped into the conversation as well, replying to Diggs' main account on Instagram, "aye Diggyy it's time brother."
For many Bills fans, it might be an easy idea to get behind. Diggs was one of the best receivers in franchise history, and even after a messy ending to his time in Buffalo, plenty of fans never completely turned on him. Once he signed with New England, that may have been a different story, but with his stint there now over, it's not surprising to see people wondering if there is any chance of bringing him back.
The reality, though, is that there is one major obstacle standing in the way.
Could Diggs actually accept the role Buffalo would likely have for him?
This is not the same offense he left. Buffalo has built out its receiving room over the past year, bringing in DJ Moore to be the top option while Khalil Shakir has established himself as a reliable piece of the offense. The organization is also heavily invested in developing younger receivers like Keon Coleman and Skyler Bell.
If Diggs came back today, there is a legitimate argument that he would not be the No. 1 receiver. Depending on how the depth chart shakes out, he might not even be the No. 2.
And that is where the conversation gets interesting.
The same competitive fire that made Diggs one of the NFL's elite receivers is also what makes it hard to picture him embracing a reduced role. Throughout his career, he has been at his best when he is the focal point of an offense. Asking him to come back and be happy with a handful of targets every week feels like a difficult sell.
That is not a criticism of Diggs. In many ways, that mentality is exactly what helped him become a perennial 1,000-yard receiver and one of the best playmakers in football over the last decade.
From a football standpoint, the fit is easy to understand. Pairing Diggs back up with Josh Allen would give Buffalo another proven weapon and add even more depth to an already intriguing offense. In a vacuum, there is not much to dislike about the idea.
But football is rarely that simple. Personalities, expectations, and roles matter, especially when you're talking about a player who has spent most of his career being the featured target.
There is also the question of timing. The Bills do not appear to have an obvious need at wide receiver right now, making it hard to justify a reunion unless something changes. If injuries hit later in training camp or during the regular season, the conversation could become a lot more realistic.
For now, though, it feels like exactly what it is: a fun offseason discussion fueled by social media breadcrumbs and current players showing some love to a former teammate.
A Diggs return would make for an interesting story. Whether it would actually work is a much tougher question to answer.
