The 2025 NFL season is just around the corner, which means the Buffalo Bills are days away from beginning their run for a Super Bowl victory. However, the organization made a move earlier this week to improve the current roster prior to kickoff.
After a brief stint with the Jacksonville Jaguars last season, Davis is now signing with the team that drafted him, according to Adam Schefter on Tuesday.
As a fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Davis eventually became a key addition to Buffalo's passing attack, recording over 3,200 receiving yards and 33 touchdowns in his first four seasons at the NFL level. However, the 26-year-old playmaker ultimately decided to sign with the Jaguars last offseason, but was unable to carve out a role with rookie wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. emerging as the team's leading pass catcher.
Now, Davis has a chance to revitalize his career after he recovers from a torn meniscus he sustained last season.
One of the main reasons that may have contributed to the resigning of Davis points to the lack of development with second-year wideout Keon Coleman. The former second-round pick of the 2024 NFL Draft was underwhelming, finishing his first season in Buffalo with 578 receiving yards and four touchdowns. Coleman, who played 87.9 percent of his snaps out wide, was projected to take over Davis' role after signing with Jacksonville. But the acquisition of Davis could help the passing game, along with freeing up other pass catchers like Coleman.
Once he is back from injury, Davis gives the Bills an extra perimeter threat alongside free agent signing Joshua Palmer. This allows Coleman to take on a more dynamic role in the passing game and relieving him of the "X" receiver role in 2025. With Coleman's size and athleticism, there is a possibility that he can develop into that type of player for Buffalo, but Davis' prior experience with the Bills gives Coleman the ability to be used in many different forms outside of a prototypical "X".
In addition to providing more freedom on offense, Davis also gives the Bills more depth at the receiver position. Outside of Coleman and Palmer, Buffalo has multiple playmakers that can play in the slot, such as Khalil Shakir and Elijah Moore. But if one of the two outside receivers go down with an injury, Davis is a perfect rotational guy this season.
Once Davis is back in the mix for the Bills this season, it gives the franchise an added piece to help in their title run this season.
