The Buffalo Bills are built to contend for a Super Bowl. One veteran may hold the key to whether they finally get there.
If you ask 100 Bills fans which player is under the most pressure heading into the 2026 season, I'd bet most would give the same answer: Josh Allen.
It's a fair pick. He's entering his ninth season, has an NFL MVP win under his belt, is the face of the franchise, and he's the quarterback trying to bring Buffalo its first Super Bowl. Until that happens, every season will come with enormous expectations.
But Allen is too obvious.
The player I think is under the most pressure this season is Bradley Chubb.
When the Bills signed Chubb to a three-year, $43.5 million contract, they weren't looking to add another veteran to the rotation. They were looking for someone who could help solve one of the biggest issues that has followed this team for years.
Finding a consistent pass rush when it matters most.
Buffalo's been good enough to contend for a championship for several years now. The offense has consistently been among the league's best, and Allen has done everything anyone could reasonably ask of him. Yet when the Bills' playoff runs have ended, it's often pointed back to one question: Did they do enough to affect the opposing quarterback?
That's why Chubb is here.
The Bills believe Greg Rousseau is one of the NFL's better young edge rushers. Now they need someone offenses also have to account for on the opposite side. If Chubb can provide that, it changes everything.
Quarterbacks have less time to throw; Rousseau sees more one-on-one opportunities; The secondary is asked to cover for less time; and the entire defense becomes more dangerous.
That's a lot of responsibility for one player.
The pressure has nothing to do with Chubb's talent. When he's at his best, he's shown exactly the kind of impact player the Bills envisioned adding to their defense.
The pressure comes from the expectations.
Buffalo didn't make this move hoping Chubb would simply be a solid contributor. They brought him in because they believe he can help elevate a defense that has fallen short in the biggest moments.
Could T.J. Parker eventually become that player? Maybe. The rookie has plenty of upside, but the Bills aren't counting on him to carry that burden in Year 1. They're counting on Chubb.
Allen will always be the player everyone talks about because that's what comes with being an elite quarterback. But the Bills already know what they have in him.
The bigger question is whether Chubb can be the missing piece on a defense that's trying to help Buffalo finally get over the hump.
If the answer is yes, the Bills' Super Bowl chances become that much stronger. If it isn't, they'll once again spend the offseason wondering what more they could have done.
