Bills head coach Joe Brady says honesty, trust, and accountability are the foundation of his successful working relationship with Josh Allen.
The relationship between Joe Brady and quarterback Josh Allen has been one of the driving forces behind the Buffalo Bills' offense's success over the past two seasons.
For Brady, however, that relationship isn't built simply on trust. It's built on honesty.
Appearing recently on ESPN's This is Football, Brady was asked how he balances being relatable with demanding accountability from his players. Brady said building relationships is essential if coaches expect players to perform at a high level.
"I don't believe you can demand excellence without being empathetic and understanding, you know, what makes guys tick," Brady said.
That philosophy extends to his relationship with Allen, where Brady says both men are comfortable challenging one another because they know they're working toward the same goal.
"I look at the end of the day is we get to be honest with each other," Brady said. "I can bring them in and let them know, like, that's not the expectation, what it looks like. And he can do the same."
Brady said those conversations work because both understand they come from a place of mutual respect rather than criticism.
"We know that we're both in it for the same reasons. We have a lot of love for one another, and we know what we're ultimately chasing," Brady said.
That shared objective allows difficult conversations to remain productive, even when expectations aren't being met.
"I think because we have a relationship from that standpoint, we know when the standard is the standard when it's not. And it allows us to be comfortable and know that [I have] a lot of love for him," Brady said.
Allen has spoken about that relationship from his perspective as well, explaining that the two spend time together away from the football facility, whether it's golfing, sharing meals, or simply talking about life. That time away from football has helped strengthen the trust between quarterback and coach, making it easier to have honest conversations once they're back at work.
"It's pretty cool that we get to kind of share similar lives in that aspect outside of the facility," Allen said.
For Brady, that balance between accountability and understanding is at the heart of good coaching. Honest conversations aren't always easy, but he believes they're necessary when everyone involved is focused on the same goal.
It's a philosophy that has helped shape one of the NFL's top offenses, and one Brady believes starts with relationships built on trust, honesty, and a shared commitment to winning.
